Hi Folks

It's been a busy couple of weeks so while I'm recovering I thought I'd put pen to paper so to speak and tell you all about it.

I like to do at least one interesting and memorable thing each year. Not always easy as I work 6 days per week but every now and then an opportunity presents itself.

In 2005 I was invited to watch Europe at their UEA show and have a chat with them afterwards. I'd first met drummer Ian Haugland whilst eating my breakfast the morning after the Sweden Rock Festival in 2003 where I'd performed with Budgie! I've kept in touch with him on and off since then and that's how I got to meet the rest of the band.

In 2006 my old band Ozzmosis asked me to play a few gigs while their new guitarist got up to speed. After the seriousness of Budgie's 2005 tour it was an absolute blast. We recorded a DVD of the final show and it's great to watch. My outstanding memory is of unloading from the back of the Assembly Rooms in Tamworth where we played with Mentallica. There was a Polish guy staggering about outside with a 2 litre bottle of strong cider. He pointed up at us and shouted "You……..Ozzy Mess!". You couldn't make it up.

In 2007 I got a gig performing in the first ever "Non-West-End" production of We Will Rock You. I got to act sing, wear make up (!) and play guitar in front of 4,500 people in 2 days.

In 2008 I visited Australia for the 1st time. That was a great adventure and as well as all the usual tourist stuff I got to watch Iron Maiden playing some of my all time favourite songs on their "Somewhere On Tour" er…tour.

So what of 2009?

Patience my dears………….

Several years ago I was contacted by a guy called Konsta from Finland who asked if Budgie would be interested in playing there. He gave me some venue contact details and I passed them on to Budgie's manager and that was that. Over the years we've kept in touch - and thanks to Konsta I now have a very healthy collection of Budgie Live recordings with me on guitar including the aforementioned Sweden Rock Festival gig. By the way that show was also filmed albeit only three songs but if anyone has a copy I'd love to see it - that was a big show for me.

Konsta and his friends Jukka and Jose began writing songs and I offered to help out with some solos. One song we recorded was a cover of Rumblin' Train by Badlands which featured one of my favourite guitarists Jake E Lee.

This year is Konsta and his wife Taru's 10th wedding anniversary and Konsta asked if I'd come over and perform my One Man Rock Show at their party. At the same time Jose - the Brazilian singer - would be in Scandinavia at the 2009 Sweden Rock Festival. It seemed too good an opportunity to miss to have our "Internet Band" also perform at the party. So that's what happened; Konsta organized a list of 9 songs including Rumblin' Train, Never Know Why (great Ozzy song from The Ultimate Sin album) and Napoleon Bona Parte 1 and 2 (by Budgie).

It was quite a weekend. Skin played at the Wolverhampton Civic on the Thursday night - this great band had reformed for just 3 gigs so I couldn't miss it. 3 hours after the show I was driving to Gatwick airport to fly to Helsinki.

Konsta met me at the other end and drove me to his house. I was planning to sleep when I got there but when Konsta offered me refreshments I decided that eating was the better option!

My favourite delicacy that I was offered was Raparperipiirakka. This was a kind of Rhubarb cake which we had warmed up with ice cream. Fantastic.

We needed to stock up with booze and snacks so we visited a local supermarket where they had the most wonderful selection of ciders! I was amazed to see Strongbow in the fridge so Konsta bought some cans of that along with a selection of more exotic ciders (hey beer tastes like shit to me!).

We picked up Jose who was on his way back from town and went back to Konsta's house. Taru is a wonderful cook and she made us dinner before Jukka and his wife Maarit came for the one and only rehearsal session before the gig.

Konsta let me use his Gibson and Epiphone guitars and his friend Esa let me use his Marshall. During a break in the rehearsal Konsta's son Aarne performed a Karaoke version of Hard Rock Hallelujah by Lordy which was awesome!

We went through the songs fairly easily and hit the Sauna. I couldn't believe this guy has his own sauna! Absolutely wonderful. The rest of the evening was spent in and out of the sauna and getting nicely drunk. Finally went to bed at 1.30am!

Woke up at 10.30am thinking it was about 7! Couldn't see! Still managed to fit in two good meals before setting off to the gig at about 3.30pm. I'd set up and re-strung Konsta's guitars so that we could play the original songs in standard tuning and the covers de-tuned the same as they are on record.

The venue (Festival Hall) was right in the centre of Helsinki in what looked like a shopping mall. We parked in an underground car park which looked like some weird subterranean lunar landscape and a short Russian gentleman called Vladimir took us up in the lift with the gear. The venue itself was like a very nice school hall. Absolutely spotless with a digital sound system controlled from a laptop. Behind the stage was one of the finest dressing rooms I've seen with 2 separate shower and toilet blocks, a water cooler and a huge sofa bed which was adorned with what Jose called "love marks".

One of Konsta's friends had printed T-Shirts with the name of the band "Ocean Rider" featuring a 16th century war ship with a Finnish, Brazilian and UK flag emblazoned on the sails, and these were presented to us after the soundcheck. The band is now called "Region Free" but hey, it was a lovely gesture.

The show kicked off with Konsta and Taru dancing to a Waltz by Konsta Jyljä that they danced at their wedding. This was followed by Stonehenge from Black Sabbath's "Born Again" album and towards the end Jukka followed the "heartbeat" with his kick drum and slowed it down to build up an atmosphere to the intro to the first song.

There were one or two hiccups during the set but considering we had only met the day before it was bloody amazing! Obviously we'd practiced the songs in the weeks before but there's no substitute for playing as a band and learning each other's idiosyncrasies.

Konsta and Taru's friends were largely made up of the football team that Konsta used to play for. They gave us a great response and that was carried over to my One Man Show which lasted just over an hour.

After the show we had a party in the Kurdish restaurant next door to the Festival Hall and this went on until after midnight. We then got a taxi back from the central square to Konsta's and had another drink and a quick sauna and shower before hitting the sack around 4.30am!

After a quick breakfast and a sneak preview of the recording from the gig on Jose's Edirol recorder Konsta drove me to the airport.

The whole weekend was a whirlwind and I met loads of warm friendly people, played my first One Man Rock Show outside the UK, experienced a bit of culture and made some great new friends. I am a lucky guy.

Fast forward one week……..

The Sonic Rock Solstice Festival was the most important gig date on my calendar this year. This was where my band Anubis would have to prove itself on a big stage and be worthy of the headline slot we had been given. This is the biggest gig I've ever done as a co-founder of a band that plays original material.

We had an extra rehearsal in the week so that we could perfect our new songs Locked In and Abandoned as well as brushing up on the weaker songs in our set. Our 3rd gig was to be our longest yet with 16 songs in total.

Pete Sarah and Syb had gone down on the Saturday to watch some of the other bands and check out the facilities. I was gigging on the Friday and Saturday so I couldn't make it until the Sunday. Me and Kev drove down separately on Sunday afternoon. Although the sun didn't materialize until late evening it was dry and not too hot so it was comfortable while we waited to go on.

One of the highlights for me was meeting a guy called Paul who was part of the crew on a gig I did with Budgie in Maidstone in 2006. He asked me to play the Breadfan riff which I just about managed in the rabble at the end of our last song!

The crew were very helpful and we finally had a sound engineer who was worthy of the name. Sarah's voice was loud and clear and there was no feedback.

There was a bit of drama as the previous bands had run over leaving us with a shorter set time. We ditched the solos, the cover version and 2 of our own songs but it was still a good set.

Were we worthy of headlining the gig? I think so. Thanks to all the rehearsing we had done we were pretty tight, relaxed and put our songs across very smoothly whilst managing to have a bit of a laugh on stage despite being absolutely knackered. We started the set at around 12.20am which is the 3rd latest I've ever started a show!

I drove back at, shall we say a vigorous speed to stop me falling asleep so although it took 2 hours and 15 minutes to get there it was only 1 hour and 40 mins to get back! Tidy.

So there you go - 2 pretty amazing weekends. When I look back and try to remember what I did that was interesting in 2009 these are the events that will be at the top of the list.

Two Major Upcoming Shows
Hi folks - exciting times at the moment. I've been invited to perform my One-Man-Rock-Show in Helsinki. It's basically a private party but instead of the usual working men's club with rows of tables laid out with sausage rolls and ham sandwiches (which are always welcome obviously!) it's at a proper venue with sound engineer and lights etc. The food will be in a restaurant which is next door to the venue itself. I'm really looking forward to it!

The other exciting gig is the 3rd Anubis show which will be by far the biggest yet. We're headlining the Summer Solstice Rock festival in Builth Wells in deepest darkest Wales! It's a 3 day festival and we're the last band on the 3rd day which is the actual Solstice (21st June). We will be playing several songs form the forthcoming album and I have to say the band is sounding AWESOME.
Each rehearsal is sounding better and better and I'm so pleased with how well it's all coming together.

While I'm on the subject, it's about time I thanked everyone who turned up to the Old Wharf the other week. It was hectic and sweaty but the crowd were wonderful and the organisers (Black Scorpion Promotions) did a great job in difficult circumstances.
There were some great bands on the bill including Adust who have offered to support us on our Album Launch Gig on 18th November at the Robin 2 in Bilston. They're very heavy but absolutely top notch and will help make it a great gig.

I'm off to see one of my all time favourite bands next Thursday at the Wolverhampton Civic: Skin. If you're there come and say "Hi!"

Monday April 6th 2009
Wheatsheaf, West Bromwich under New Management.
One of my most regular venues has changed hands and the new managers are going to keep the Live Entertainment going. This means that I will be appearing, as originally advertised on Friday 17th April. It's a good venue with a great crowd so I'm pleased it's still going to be a regular fixture. See you there!

Anubis second gig!
I'm happy to report the Mansfield gig was a success so we're looking forward to our next gig with a slightly longer set. The gig is part of a festival which has been organised by the charity Rock Against Child Pornography. We are towards the top end of the bill so we're hoping to start sometime around 9pm. The address of the gig is:
The Old Wharf, Oxford Street, Digbeth, Birmingham, B5 5NR. Not sure what the entry fee is (I'm sure it will be cheap!) but for any details or enquiries please contact the organisers via their web site (just click the link above).

Tuesday March 10th 2009

Hi Folks! How the devil are you? Just got time for a quick catch up because the weather's too bad to go cycling this morning :o( Yeah I'm trying to get fit again - it's that time of year. My 15.4 mile circuit is currently taking 1 hour 10 mins which is pretty poor. I'll be happy when I get it down to about 56 mins although it's been a couple of years since I cycled regularly so it could take a few weeks.

I've also been busy working on new songs for my One-Man-Rock-Show. "About bloody time!" I hear you cry. So far I've managed "We Rock" by Dio; "Run tho the Hills" by Iron Maiden; "Madhouse" by Anthrax; "Poison" by Alice Cooper; "Why Can't This Be Love" by Van Halen; "Don't Stop Believing" by Journey and a couple of others. I am planning to do more over the course of 2009 so keep coming to the gigs! Some of the new songs, especially We Rock and Madhouse are songs I've always loved but never dared to play live. My attitude these days is I'm happy playing the traditional crowd pleasers as long as the audience can allow me a little self indulgence. The nature of these new songs is that they're quite a challenge vocally and I think my voice is getting stronger as a result. The other upside of these new tunes is that when I'm playing songs I like, I'll put a bit more passion into the performance.

Anubis first gig! That's right skip! This fabled band of which I have oft spoken is finally ready to put on a show. It's taken a bloody long time but we've finally got things sorted out and we've been asked to play at this year's Budgie convention at The Intake Club in Mansfield. We will be playing a 1 hour set made up of songs from our debut album Sibuna as well as our EP Avatar. We've been rehearsing hard for the last couple of months and it's coming together nicely.
Anubis was interviewed recently by DJ Beerman of Top Rock Radio and you can watch the full 25 mins by clicking HERE and scrolling down until you see the You Tube like window. It's pretty damn cool! That's all for now - see you soon.......

Thursday January 2009
HAPPY NEW YEAR YOU BUGGERS!
Due to seasonal festivities it's taken a bit longer than anticipated but I've finally updated my Gig List for 2009. You will notice a number of Anubis shows including a Live Radio session in March. As soon as I get the link for the radio station I will attatch it to the gig in my list so that you can catch the first glimpse of Anubis performing live. We are hoping to add more shows to the list and also produce our 2nd album later this year.

Thanks to everyone who braved the cold and scary monsters to come to the Ozzmosis show on Friday. We had two excellent support bands (no idea what they were called but both were bloody good!). JB's front of house sound engineer Simon and monitor engineer Martin did a wonderful job and thanks to those guys my guitar came across better than ever. Thanks also to ex-Ozzmosis drummer Paul Rodgers for the great light show and of course thanks to Kev, Cal and Glyn of Ozzmosis for having me as their stand-in guitarist. It was a BLAST!
And well done LEWIS HAMILTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Monday September 29th 2008
Hi folks! It's been a hectic few months and seems set to continue up to Christmas. Thanks for everyone who's supported me at my One Man Rock Shows over the summer. My Autumn calendar is as nicely full with gigs every Friday and Saturday so I'm really pleased about that.
HALLOWE'EN SPECTACULAR! Top Ozzy Osbourne Tribute band Ozzmosis have asked me to play with them once again at JB's, Dudley on Friday October 31st. The show starts at 9pm and there are 2 support bands. I'm having fun re-learning the Ozzy repertoire for that one. I played with them from 2000 to 2002 and again in March 2006. They really are a top band and Kev Ingram does a superb impression of the great man. Check out their web page HERE .
Anubis News We are rehearsing more regularly now as we have gigs booked for next year. We're experimenting with arrangements, which songs to play acoustically, keyboard sounds, guitar sounds etc. It's good fun and I think the show will be really powerful with loads of dynamics. For more info and links to the Anubis You Tube Channel check out the Anubis web page HERE.
That's all for now. Don't forget to keep checking my gigs page for updates and make use of your Refresh button to make sure you have the very latest information. Cheers!

Thursday July 24th 2008
This is like Groundhog Day re-my last News Update! The Old Cross in Langley has changed hands and despite my attempts to persuade him, the new landlord has refused to honour my bookings there. This is a shame as I currently don't play any other venues in that area. It won't be any consolation to people living near the Old Cross but I have secured a booking at The Swan Inn at Stone for the same night. The date is Saturday 2nd August and the show starts at 10pm and admission is FREE! The full address is: 18 Stafford Street, Stone, ST15 8QW and the number is 01785 815570. It's a nice drive up to Stone so why not come and join me?

Wednesday June 25th 2008
Gig near Stafford tomorrow night! I've just been booked to play tomorrow night in Stone near Stafford. The venue is the Swan Inn and they specialize in real ales and ciders. If anyone would like to drive me there let me know!! Obviously it's very short notice but if you've got no plans for tomorrow night, come on down. Show starts at 10pm and admission is FREE! The full address is: 18 Stafford Street, Stone, ST15 8QW and the number is 01785 815570.

Tuesday June 24th 2008
A natural progression has occured - I've finally got around to creating my own You Tube Channel! There you will find links to all my You Tube videos to date. Click HERE to go to it. I will be adding new guitar videos when I get the chance - hopefully better quality one's too now I've figured out how to get the best from my web cam.
THE PHARAOH! My mighty rock guitar instrumental from Anubis' debut album Sibuna was finally performed live last week in West Bromwich. An historic occasion methinks.
I've updated my Giglist so have a look and see how it's grown. My gigs are finally picking up which is a relief and I'm enjoying playing new places. One place worth checking out is the Neachells Pub and Restaurant on the Willenhall Road in Wolverhampton. If you get there early enough you might be able to fit in a meal before the show!

Monday June 16th 2008
Here's a video of me playing another instrumental from my My World album. This one's Scotch Mist and the main tune used to be part of my solo spot on my first couple of years with Budgie. This tune was actually my entry for the 1996 Guitarist of the Year contest. It took several months to write and is probably the most difficult guitar tune I've ever written. As a result there are a few minor cock-ups but most of it is OK. I've also managed to improve the sound quality compared to my previous videos by using the sound from my mixer rather than the web cam's built in microphone. As Benny Hill used to say "Learnink all ze time..........." Download it HERE

And here's another one! Also from my My World album - one of my most popular instrumentals from my One Man Rock Show "Way Out West". If I hadn't won the Guitarist of the Year competition in 1998 this would have been my 1999 entry! All the instrumental tracks on My World are Guitarist of the Year entries which is why they tend to be a bit short. Freethinka has a tune called Eastern Wind which is over 13 minutes long along with some other more varied tracks including, of course Angry Dolphins. Download Way Out West HERE

Tuesday June 10th 2008
Here's another video . This is the tune that got me into the Guitarist of the Year 1994 final. It's called Playing Truant and features on my original solo album "My World" Click HERE to download it.

Monday June 9th 2008
Here's another guitar video for ya. This time I'm playing Angry Dolphins from the Anubis album Sibuna. This track originally appeared on my 2nd solo album "Freethinka" and I wrote it when I was demonstrating "Snarling Dogs" guitar pedals back in 2000. This one uses a sound originally created by their Mold Spore pedal which I managed to recreate with my Boss GT-5. The effects used are Ring Modulator (ooh er missus....) and Wah. Enjoy! Click HERE and download it to your hard drive.

Friday June 6th 2008
I've finally got around to using my web cam to film some guitar stuff. I've recorded myself playing "The Pharaoh" which is an instrumental I wrote for the Anubis album "Sibuna". It's around 7 minutes long and nearly 90 Megs so it will take a while to download but check it out. It's probably best if you save it to your hard drive first by right clicking and "Save Target As". To download it click HERE

Friday May 16th 2008
Happy birthday to me, happy birthday to me etc etc...Yes I'm officially old (again). Thanks to everyone for their well wishes - I'll see you all tomorrow at my official birthday gig at the LA Rock Cafe in downtown Cannock where I'll be in a very relaxed state if you know what I mean........

Thursday 1st May 2008
I've just re-organised my Downloads page so that when you click on the CDs you get a complete track listing and several free MP3 downloads for each CD. Have fun!

Wednesday 30th April 2008
SIMON'S NEW LIVE ALBUMS NOW ON SALE!
That's right folks! After many years of Live album drought I've finally got around to producing not one but TWO DOUBLE LIVE ALBUMS! Each album contains 30 tracks including songs and instrumentals recorded at many of my One-Man-Rock-Shows last year. The sound quality is by far the best I've produced to date thanks largely to work I did on my PA settings back in June last year.
Rather than recording one show and putting it out "warts-and-all" as I've done in the past, I've sifted through approximately 40 hours of material to find the recordings which have a certain "magic". This means that what you hear won't necessarily be the "perfect" take - there are still a few cock-ups here and there! Instead, I've used takes where I pushed the boundaries a bit more and experimented with the music whilst feeding off the audience. There are some really cool "one-off" takes where I've played things in a certain way and in places the hairs on the back of your neck will stand up - I GUARANTEE IT!
In short, these are the Ultimate Simon Lees One-Man-Rock-Show albums and if you live too far away to get to one of my shows, these are the next best thing.

Monday 3rd March2008
Got back from Australia last week. Just popped over for a holiday which is why I've been a bit slow to answer e-mails! Now I'm back and there's loads to do. Including my new live album. It's been 6 years since "Live at the Stumble" and this one's going to be the biggest by far featuring well over 30 tracks recorded at various one-man-shows last year. I'll keep you posted on that one. "Sibuna" is selling well - thanks mostly to the efforts of Pete Williamson and his amazing PR skills! The reports coming back have been very positive and everyone has been very happy with their purchase. We're getting lots of airplay in various parts of the world and we're looking forward to putting a live show together. I've got a few new gigs coming up so I hope to see you all at those - check my Giglist for details. That's all for now. See ya soon!

Tuesday 29th January 2008
ANUBIS DEBUT ALBUM NOW ON SALE! Thirteen tracks of some of the heaviest, mellowest, strangest music you'll ever hear. It's come out really well and I'm extremely proud of it. The first 100 internet orders will be signed so get your order in today! The cost is £10.50 plus £2.00 p&p worldwide. You can buy it HERE. Or here. Or even HEAR!

Tuesday 8th January 2008
HAPPY NEW YEAR!! What a Christmas that was - bloody great! The only disappointment was not having the stomach capacity for all the good things. I want to invent an external USB stomach so that when my stomach gets full - just plug this sucker in and you've got room for another 3 Christmas dinners. Imagine, as technology moves on you could increase the capacity to 50 or 100 dinners for the same size USB stomach. One day......

Anubis' debut album "SIBUNA" will be on sale very shortly. We will be having an official launch party on Friday 25th January at a place called "The Venue". The party will be strictly Invite only and limited to 150 so if you'd like an invite, send an e-mail to Pete at band@anubismusic.co.uk . The party will start at 8.00pm and carry on untill around 2.00am and there will be a rock DJ and buffet. The band will be there to sign stuff and pose for photos etc and the night should be a lot of fun!

Tuesday 18th December 2007
Just a quick update. If you click HERE and find the button that says "Listen Again" before Friday 21st Dec you'll be able to hear me and Andy Hart playing our new instrumental "Duel on the Nile" from the forthcoming Anubis album "Sibuna". This was broadcast on BBC Radio Shropshire's radio show "The Friday Night Gerbil". This is the first time (correct me if I'm wrong) that two ex-Budgie guitarists have written, performed on and recorded a tune which has been played on the airwaves. Historic stuff indeed...

Tuesday 27th November 2007
Anubis Debut Album: It's taken a little longer than anticipated but the mixes are nearly finished. We hope to complete mixing this Sunday and next week the finished mixes will be sent to Paul Cobbold who will create the master which will then go to the pressing plant. Paul's credits include engineering Bohemian Rhapsody so I think we're in pretty safe hands! I'll be surprised if the albums get pressed before January but as soon as they become available I'll let you all know. If you haven't heard our stuff, there are some rough demo versions on the Anubis My Space. The album is called Sibuna....
New Live CD:
It's been fun recording the album and a good chance to learn how to use my new computer system. I'm having major problems with the actual computer at the moment which is currently back at the shop being stared at by a load of guys in white coats scratcing their heads. I hope it will be fixed soon so I can crack on with some new Simon tunes! I'm planning to put out a new Live CD early next year and I've got recordings of all my gigs since June to sift through and make a decent compilation.
December Gigs: My Gig List for December is filling out nicely - I'm especially looking forward to the Stile Inn this Saturday. I played there a few weeks ago and it was the best crowd I've played to in a while. I'm back in Warrington next week too so that's another cool one. Of course all my gigs are fabulous so just turn up wherever you can!
www.pubgigs.com has finally gone live and is fully functional. This website has been set up as a networking tool for artists and bands to hook up with venues. Naturally I have my own page in the Members section which you don't have to be a member to browse!
www.alloutguitar.com Has had a major overhaul so go and check it out. I'm hoping to dedicate a bit more time to that next year and I'm gonna try and come up with some TABs of my solo stuff and maybe some Anubis stuff to use as a basis for tutorials. I'm also hoping to do some tutorials and maybe a new DVD about setting up the perfect guitar sound!
So there's lots to be getting on with! I'd better get back to it but I hope to see you all soon and if I don't see you before - HAVE A GREAT CHRISTMAS!!!!

Tuesday 18th September 2007
Time for a long overdue report methinks... Last Sunday's All Out Guitar Fest was a great success and thoroughly enjoyable. Some of the artists/bands (including myself) were videoed and all being well the highlights will be available on a DVD at some point. I'd like to thank Owen Edwards and Phil Arneil for inviting me to play amonst such an awesome line up of guitar players. Thanks also to my good mate Simon Haycock for helping me with my gear and keeping me awake on the drive home! Thanks to everyone who came along too including Sid from India and three very special guests who surprised the hell out of me by turning up! Cheers lads!
It's been a quiet old summer and quite nerve wracking financially to be honest. Happily though, since the start of September things have pretty much returned to normal and I'm back to being rushed off my feet. My new band Anubis is hoping to have our album on sale by the end of November. I met ex-Budgie guitarist Andy Hart for the first time last Tuesday and we did some recording at his studio in Shropshire. Andy is a really cool bloke and he's written a superb piece of music for the album. I've written lyrics and will be doing my best Chris Cornell impression for that song which, for now is called "In Your Mind".
I've got so many new pics which need putting up on the Raw Footage area of my gallery from the last 9 months - I will try to get around to it soon.
Until then, I'll see y'all around!

Wednesday 1st August 2007

I spoke to one of the AllOutGuitarFest organisers this morning and I have to say I'm getting quite excited about the whole thing! I've put some links on the advert below to make it easier to visit the website for each artist/band and also where you can get hold of tickets. It should be an excellent day out!

I am sad to report that I have resigned from my position as Budgie's Lead Guitarist. This is so that I can give my full attention to my guitar students and my One Man Rock Show. It has been a huge honour to work with such an influential band and I know that Burke and Steve will have absolutely no problems in finding a replacement. I wish the lads all the very best for the future.

Just a quick update - tomorrow's gig at the Pheasant in Telford has been cancelled due to the neighbours complaining about noise (why would you live next to a pub anyway??). Next week sees the return of the Cross Guns in Wednesfield - haven't played there for a while; should be good. Also a new venue - also called the Pheasant - this time in Wednesfield.
I've been getting stuck into some serious recording for the Anubis project and you can see some of the results on the ANUBIS MySpace.
I've just re-vamped my PA settings for my one-man-show and tonight will be the test to see how much better it sounds. I'm really looking forward to trying it out! I've re-programmed all my guitar sounds (on the old GT-5) which took most of yesterday - using the same methods as my latest GT-8 settings. Works a hell of a lot better and most importantly SOUNDS a hell of a lot better! When I get the chance I'm gonna replace my current GT-5 tutorials as this new method is DYNAMITE! In case you're wondering why I'm still using the old GT-5 there are two reasons: It's smaller than the GT-8 which makes it more practical in some of the tiny venues I play. It also has a much better Ring Modulator which is essential for my instrumental "Angry Dolphins". In every other way the GT-8 is a better machine but "..Dolphins" is one of the mainstays of my live show.

Please check out my giglist for the latest gigs.
Long time no see... It's been a crazy couple of months but now I've finally got the chance to sit back and rest on my laurels, at least for a wee while.
We Will Rock You went extremely well. After a few teething troubles on the Friday night, both Saturday shows were fantastic. All three shows received standing ovations at the end (pretty rare for the Grand Theatre) and were virtually sold out. The first two shows were recorded and I'm told there will be a DVD available from the Shout Productions web site in the near future so I'll keep you posted on that. People have asked me what it was like and I have to say I absolutely LOVED it! I hope I get the chance to do it again sometime. As anyone who's seen me on stage will know, I have no problem performing - it's what I do! Once I'd learned my lines it was the same feeling I get from doing a normal gig and I felt pretty chilled on the stage. Good crowd too - well over 1000 people attended each of the three shows.
The Poland mini-tour was great. There were a couple of downsides, mainly the travelling between shows - 200miles a day along the bumpyest roads in Europe, and a slight disagreement about the guitar volume in Warsaw but apart from that we had fun. Cherry vodka is the one thing which will always stick in my mind about this trip. In fact I think there may be some still stuck somewhere in my brain - the worst hangover I've ever had! The Poles were, as usual, wonderful - the most enthusiastic audiences anywhere and lovely people all round. Soundman kindly let me use a couple of their awesome guitar amps again (the probable cause of the aforementioned disagreement! - but boy did they ROCK!) The last day we had a few hours to kill so we spent them in and around the beautiful square in Krakow drinking Zywiec beer (not exactly Strongbow but better than most crappy beers - I hate beer!) and taking in the sights. I'll try and get some pics on my Raw Footage page but until then, feast your eyes on the following links:-
Panzer Division Destroyed - Warsaw
Zoom Club - Warsaw
Photos from Poznan and Warsaw
There is a new project afoot in the name of ANUBIS . This is the brainchild of Budgie's PR and web site guy, Pete Williamson . There will be contributions from myself, Andy Hart, Sarah Cockburn and Martin Bircham. You can hear some of the stuff we've created by clicking on the above links. This has given me an excellent opportunity to explore my new gear and it's gonna be fun working with different people.
Well, gotta crack on - don't forget it's my birthday next Wednesday (16th) - I expect cake, chocolates and Strongbow in copious quantities. See ya soon!

Wednesday 28th March 2007
Just letting you know I've updated my giglist today with all my current bookings up to September.
It's been another hectic month - Budgie played 2 gigs in Sweden earlier in March and the following week I was enjoying a sunny (and windy!) break by the Red Sea in Egypt.
The WE WILL ROCK YOU show is looming large - only 9 days until opening night! Yes I'm nervous! Apparently all 3 shows are virtually sold out. There are a small number of tickets left and even if you're seated at the back - it's not THAT far from the stage as there are 3 tiers at The Grand. So come along and heckle me - it'll be a laugh!
In 2 weeks time Budgie will be going to Poland for a small tour - I'm looking forward to that. I believe our new album has been well received over there so I'm hoping those shows will be sold out too.
My new studio is soon gonna be switched on! I know, it's been nearly 3 months since I made the order (there have been many unforseen problems) but I've been too busy to use it anyway. When we get back from Poland I'm gonna start learning how to use it and by the end of the year I'm expecting to be putting tracks together for my next solo album.
Here's the promo shot for WE WILL ROCK YOU featuring Katie Fletcher (left) and Jade Meaney (right) who are both full time cast members of Shout Productions.

Tuesday 27th February 2007
Hi folks! Been a hell of a start to the New Year hence no news updates. I've finally bought a new car - something I've been planning for 2 years so I shouldn't be boring everyone to death about that any more! I've also been re-decorating my studio to accommodate my new gear. I've traded my Fostex 16-track and Spirit 328 desk in for a Carillon PC system running Cubase 4. It's taken a while to get the room sorted and I have to thank Simon Haycock for his help in choosing the right materials and putting the thing together. I'm having a bit of trouble (to put it mildly) with the new set-up and as things stand at the minute I feel a bit "high and dry". One of the guys from the shop has kindly offered to come to my house to help me sort it out so hopefully I'll be able to start work on my new album before too long.
WE WILL ROCK YOU!!!!
If you've seen my gig list for April you'll notice I'm at the Grand Theatre over Easter weekend. I've been busy learning my lines for my acting debut in the Ben Elton/Queen musical "We Will Rock You". I play the character "Pop" who is an ageing Hippy/librarian/bartender/rebel and basically gets all the best lines. It's a great part and probably the easiest to play. I'll have some promo photos soon.

Wednesday 20th December 2006
BIG NEWS!! Al Atkins (founder of Judas Priest) new album is now pressed and (I think) released. This is the album I was working on with Al before I joined Budgie. It's taken a hell of a long time to get done and I know Al's had a few problems with record companies etc. The album is called "Demon Deceiver: The Sin Sessions" and features 10 tracks; 7 of which I've played on including the title track "Demon Deceiver" which I wrote. I finally got my hands on the finished product yesterday and I have to say it's superb. There are a few guest appearances - Diamond Head's Brian Tatler plays lead on one track; and there are contributions from various other drummers and guitarists who give each track a slightly different flavour. There are also a couple of vintage Judas Priest songs which are "Victim of Changes" and "Dreamer Deceiver". The album is being distributed by a company called "Diesel and Glory" c/o "Deaf and Dumb Music" who are based in Sweden.

Just a quickie - loads of stuff to sort out this week. I've put 6 new gallery pages on the Raw Footage section. Basically the top 6 on that page. I've also added a list of You Tube and My Space video clips on my Downloads page. Scroll down and it's just below my merchandise section. If anybody has video clips of Budgie or myself - get it on You Tube or My Space, let me know and I'll add the link to my list.
I dunno if I'll get the chance to write a tour diary as I originally planned so for now I'll just say THANK YOU to everyone who came to watch us this year. Especially the Two Blokes who managed a staggering 25 out of 28 gigs! Have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy and stress free New Year.

Monday 6th November 2006 (2nd Update!)
Gotta share this with you - a You Tube video of Budgie's gig last Saturday in Cardiff - the best gig of the tour so far. Here's a magic moment from "I Turned to Stone". Click HERE . I'll be writing one of my famous Tour Gastronomic Diaries soon as I get the chance. Keep checking back! More You Tube videos please, they're great!
I've added some new photos to my Raw Footage gallery. They are from Budgie's Poole gig this September and were taken by the superb Bournemouth photographer Mike Clark. Click HERE to go straight to them.

NEW BUDGIE ALBUM ON SALE!! Yes folks, I am proud to announce that I am now holding in my left hand (!) the finished (and mine is also signed!!) copy of "You're All Living in Cuckooland" - the new (and by now) mythical Budgie album. I am glad to say it sounds fantastic. It has been recorded and produced by Burke Shelley and Nigel Thomas in Burke's studio in Cardiff.

Listening to the album from start to finish is most enjoyable - you don't get bored. A few times you may wonder "what the hell is that?" There are some seriously weird guitar sounds in there. There are some very synth - like sounds but no keyboards got anywhere near the recording. Most of the guitar solos were improvised and as a result are right "on-the-edge". A bit like driving around a corner on two wheels!

The title track features the finest guitar solo in the world EVER! I'm not joking! It's a bit different to what you might expect from me but honestly - it's AWESOME! I remember sitting in Burke's studio with Burke pressing the record button and Steve sitting patiently behind the drums. I just went for the take - not particularly thinking about it, knowing I could do as many takes as I liked. The first one was the one you'll hear.

There are some really catchy tunes that stay in your head all day long! I mentioned a while ago that there is some very experimental stuff on this album - stuff I haven't heard before, at least not the way we've done it. The last track "I'm Compressing the Comb on a Cockerel's Head" is the ultimate non-arrangement! The first time I heard the final mix I burst out laughing but the chorus is as catchy as hell. It's also got the weirdest and longest solo on the album. If you've worn out your Pink Floyd albums and want music to get absolutely s*** - faced to; this one's for you. Just stick it on repeat!

There is a trio of acoustic tracks (including the title track) which will soothe your soul. "(Don't Want to) Find That Girl" will have you dancing 'till dawn. "Justice", "Dead Men Don't Talk" and "Falling" have each been played live and are seriously riffy head bangers. "I Don't Want to Throw You" is a "brick s*** - house" of a song with a strong Indian influence. This one's a personal favourite. It features a sitar, and a good dose of musical humour. "Tell Me Tell Me" is one of the first songs we wrote for the album and again this one's a real powerhouse of a song. We're hoping to get this one into the set by the end of the tour.

You can buy the album direct from the Budgie web site by clicking HERE.

SIMON LEES ALBUMS AVAILABLE AT BUDGIE SHOWS!! The Budgie management have very kindly agreed to sell my solo CDs and Guitar Tuition DVD on the merchandise stand at all the Budgie shows. I'll be more than happy to sign copies for those that like that sort of thing!!

There have been many ups and downs this year - it's been a real roller coaster but I'm looking forward to the rest of the Budgie tour. WE'RE GONNA KICK YOUR ASS!!!

Monday 16th October 2006
On - Line Shop! I've finally got around to making my CDs and DVD available online - you can now buy them from anywhere in the world!

Thursday 28th September 2006
Happily, (now there's a word I haven't used for a couple of days) I've managed to re-instate a couple of one-man-shows which got cancelled for the tour. I'll put them on my giglist but for now here they are:-
Friday 13th October - The Mill, Beaconview Road, West Bromwich; Friday 20th October - The Pyle Cock, Rookery Street, Wednesfield; Saturday 21st October - The Pheasant, Telford; Sunday 22nd - The Old Cross, Causeway Green Road, Oldbury;
I'd like to say a huge THANK YOU to my students - many of whom have re-booked lessons at a moment's notice. You've saved my life!
It may come as a shock to some people that Budgie don't pay me a salary. I only get paid when I do gigs with the band (not recording or rehearsing) and the average UK Budgie gig only pays me approx. 20% more than I get for a one man show. Having 12 Budgie gigs cancelled at the last minute has cost me dearly and even though I've managed to re-book some lessons and gigs I've still lost a heck of a lot of money .

Monday 25th September 2006
BIG NEWS!!! (And not very good news either!)
I discovered today that the next few weeks of the Budgie Tour have been cancelled. Keep your eyes on the Budgie Official Web Site for updates. I'd like to say a big thank you to all who attended last weeks shows - in particular the Two Blokes who sadly had to miss our Poole gig due to an unfortunate accident which involved a car door and a hand!
My guitar and bass lessons schedule will now get back to normal during the course of the next few weeks and I'll be in touch with all my students (you know who you are!) to arrange lessons. If you don't hear from me for a couple of days please feel free to 'phone, text or e-mail me.

Monday 18th September 2006
Another video for you to check out. This was taken at my Spread Eagle gig on Saturday. Bear with me though 'cause I was absolutely wrecked! Soooo tired. I'm still getting back into this "work thing" after a lazy 2 weeks in Cyprus! I played Simon Haycock's new Washburn N4 and Simon should be sending me some photos soon. Thanks to everyone who turned up on Saturday - it was a great atmosphere despite the low volume! Anyway - here's the link, and thanks to Mark Lamont for taking the trouble to post it on You Tube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kVYaPxgo75s

Wednesday 13th September 2006
If you haven't already noticed, All Out Guitar.com has now gone on-line. The new guitar magazine is free and all you need to do is register your e-mail address so that you can fully access all the features. I've been interviewed for the first issue along with some really top players and I've also been given my own tutorial column. YIPEE! Over the next 9 months I will show you how to turn run-of-the-mill pentatonic scales into useful licks and phrases to create a cool guitar solo. It's aimed at advanced beginner to intermediate level and it's something I've been going through with many of my students over the past year. It's all in TAB and there are MP3's you can download so you can hear what it should sound like. This month I've started the whole thing off by explaining where the pentatonic scale comes from and how it relates to the Major scale. I've also included MP3s for the whole solo which I'll be starting to break down in the next issue.

Wednesday 9th August 2006
Just a quickie - I've added a couple of new dates to my giglist including a rare Thursday night at The Thorns near Lye next week.

Friday 14th July 2006
I've scanned my recent newspaper interview and you can download it to your PC by right clicking HERE and "Save Target As". The file is roughly 350k so shouldn't cause too much grief. I've also uploaded the BBC WM interview I did last week. The file is approx 15Meg so will take a while to download. It's pretty cool though. Right click HERE and "Save Target As" to download it to your own PC.

Thursday 6th July 2006
Just a quickie to let you know I've been asked to appear on BBC Radio WM tonight on the Jimmy Franks Show. You can log on by following this link HERE . I've been told I'll be talking about my Guitar Tuition DVD as well as the new internet magazine for guitarists - www.alloutguitar.com . The interview is due to go out at approx 10.25pm tonight.

Monday 26th June 2006
Sorry if anyone missed me at the Wanderer on Saturday - the gig was pulled at the last minute due to various problems at the pub.

Budgie's Lithuania gig has also been cancelled, so a disappointing summer for anyone hoping to catch us before this year's UK tour. Talking of Budgie, The Official Budgie web site has received a long overdue make - over so it's worth checking that out. Follow the link on my Links page.

Anyone living in the Wolverhampton area should pick up a copy of the Express & Star this Saturday as I should be featured somewhere within it's hallowed pages. Veteran music journalist John Ogden visited me at home last week and interrogated me for about an hour and a half so I'm hoping for a good write up!

Big ups and thanks to all who attended the Saddle gig the other week. Another great gig at the excellent Kimbolton venue. Bloody hot though! I've just sorted another Saddle gig which will be Saturday 19th August. The Fordhouses Cricket Club was also a huge success and I hope to return a bit sooner next time! Thanks to all who came to that one, it was a storming night.

Friday 9th June 2006
Last Sunday I took part in a charity run to raise some money for Bobby Moore's Cancer Fund. And have been a cripple ever since! I've put some photos of this memorable event on my Raw Footage gallery.
The Budgie tour has been announced - see the official site for details. Work on the new album is (believe it or not) continuing and I have to say I'm glad we didn't rush to put it out last year. It is sounding much better.
New gigs are still coming in so keep checking the Gigs page to see if I'm playing near YOU!

Thursday 1st June 2006
Just a small update. One or two new gigs coming up so check out my Gig List. I've also put a new gallery on the Raw Footage page featuring the most expensive guitar I'm ever likely to do a gig with! It's June already!! Unbeleivable.

Monday 15th May 2006
Some subtle gig changes have had to be made for various reasons:-
My Warrington gig (Seven Woods 1st July) has been re-scheduled to Fri 7th July due to my services being required in another country (!).
I've replaced The Pheasant gig (10th June) with The Bell Inn, Donnington (where I played in March).
The Mill gig on 9th July has now been moved to 14th July due to Football.
The Pyle Cock gig on 14th July has now been moved to 28th July.
I think that's about it!
I'm looking forward to opening my birthday cards tomorrow - thanks to all who have sent them! I'd especially like to thank my Finnish friend Konsta Alander for a most wonderful present! Can't really say what 'cause everybody will want one!.

Friday 12th May 2006
The Budgie gig in June has been cancelled. Not our fault! Some non-musical cock-up I believe. Sorry if anyone was looking forward to that one. Don't worry though - there are distant rumblings of more Budgie gigs on the horizon. I hope the Two Blokes have their passports handy!

Thursday 11th May 2006
A small update for ya. I've put a load of pics from my performance at the London Guitar Show from last Sunday on the Raw Footage Gallery . I've also finally got around to updating my "How to Re-String Your Guitar" tutorial with photos to make it easier to follow. Ciao for now.

Wednesday 26th April 2006
I've added the Ozzmosis pics to my Raw Footage Gallery. Some great shots here. I must mention the gig at The Saddle on April 1st. Superb night, great crowd, loadsa Strongbow - top night. Thanks to Owen, Phil & Dan for organising it. I hope we can organise a repeat performance soon.
London Guitar Show - On Sunday 7th May I'll be appearing on the "All Out Guitar . Com" stand (I think No. 268). I'm not sure what time I'll be on but I'll be around most of the day anyway so look out for me if you're there. I'll have my usual bag of swag so if you want any signed merchandise, that would be an excellent opportunity.
If anybody knows what's happening with The Pheasant at Wrockwardine Wood, please let me know. I should be playing there in June but it appears to have closed "until further notice".

Thursday 23rd March 2006
I've finally added some tour photos to my Raw Footage Gallery. It's the top three links with photos of our gigs in Sweden, Glasgow and Frome.

Wednesday 22nd March 2006
Just to let you know I've finally put my GT-8 settings on my Free Tutorials page. These explain how I got some of the sounds I used on last year's Budgie tour. Here's the LINK. I've also added a link to my Links page for ALL - OUT GUITAR . COM This is gonna be the world's best on-line guitar and bass mag. It's free to subscribe so give them your e-mail address and they'll let you know when it's due to start (should be around June). That's it for now but I'm hoping to get some photos sorted tomorrow so keep checking back;

Saturday 18th March 2006
Bet you're all wondering how the Ozzmosis gigs went? Fantastic! It was great to play the Ozzy set again and I should soon have some new photos to put on the Raw Footage page in my Gallery section. On the final gig at JB's Paul White lent me his Zakk Wylde signature (signed by Zakk himself!) which gave extra kudos to the proceedings. The show was filmed by Mr. Lee Bentley and is now on DVD for posterity and it really shows the band in all it's glory. I'd like to say "Thanks" to the lads for asking me to do the honours ad also "Good Luck" to new guitarist Aron Dowen who will be joining Ozzmosis on a permanent basis. It was fun!

These gigs have been very useful for me. I've been able to further tweak my guitar sound with a fresh pair of ears for the first time since before the Budgie 2005 tour. I've decided I'm gonna stick with one head and one cab like I did on the 2004 tour - go back to mono for simplicity. I'm also gonna use my old Westbury instead of the Gibson. Unbelievably the Westbury absolutely DESTROYED the Zakk in terms of power and performance (although the Zakk looked better!) and I won't have the headache of having to put it back in the case before I can shake hands with people at the end of the set. It's already got quite a few knocks so I'll be able to chill-out! I'm basically gonna worry less about the gear and concentrate on having fun and performing well.

I'm in the process of buying new bits and pieces for all my electric guitars (rather than buying new ones - although ....oops I just did! More on that next newsletter!) to bring them back up to new spec. I'm gonna try out some Graphtech saddles and nuts to see if they're any good.

Not much else happening at the moment. A few new gigs on the gig list so you should check that out. Don't forget to check out my My Space (www.myspace.com/1simonlees) and I'll see y'all soon!

Thursday 16th February 2006

OK folks, I can reveal the special gigs I've been keeping under wraps. Ozzmosis, the UK's No.1 Ozzy Osbourne tribute band have asked me to help out on a few gigs while their new guitarist gets up to speed. This is the band I was in before I joined Budgie. The gigs are in Dudley, Tamworth and Birmingham and details can be found Here Here and Here respectively. The set-list is mostly from Ozzy's solo career and although there are a number of classic Sabbath tunes they are done in the style of Ozzy's live album "Talk of the Devil". Here's the set:-

I Don't Know
Over the Mountain
Believer
Symptom of the Universe
Mr Crowley
Black Sabbath
Gets Me Through
Suicide Solution (Jake E Lee Solo)
Miracle Man
War Pigs
Shot in the Dark
I Don't Want to Change the World
Mama I'm Coming Home
Paranoid
Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Bark at the Moon
Crazy Train

I've always wanted to play "Over the Mountain" and "Symptom of the Universe" live so I'm really looking forward to it.

New gigs are still coming in so check out my gigs page.

New Web Guitar Magazine - All Out Guitar
I've been asked to get involved with a new web based guitar magazine called "All Out Guitar". It's due for release in the summer and will have features which will be useful and entertaining for anyone with an interest in guitars and guitar players. I'll be at the London Music Show in May to help promote the magazine along with many of the counry's top players. There may even be some special guest guitar players from around the world so I'll keep you posted with developments.

Thursday 9th February 2006
Check out the gig list for some new dates. I've also put a link to my other My Space which has the 4 audio clips from my Downloads page along with a couple of pics you may not have seen. Talking of pics, my mate Corin Spinks has put up a cool page where you can view new pics of both Budgie and myself. I've put a link to it on the Links page but you can simply click HERE. If anyone else has photos or video clips from gigs I've been involved with, why not put up your own web page and I'll put a link to it. I've got some special gigs coming up on the last weekend of Feb and the first weekend of March. I've been asked to keep the details under wraps at the moment but I'll let you know, hopefully next week. Suffice to say they will be a "one-off" series of devastating gigs playing some of my favourite music. And a bit nostalgic too.

Friday 13th January 2006
New Downloads!! Yes sir, check out my downloads page for some cracking new free tracks to copy to your hard drive. I've created 4 new MP3s made up of samples from each of my two solo albums. Two of the tracks are purely guitar solo samples and the other two are chorus and hook line samples. I've taken samples from most of the tracks on each album so each of the four the files are quite big. However, presenting the albums like this demonstrates their sheer diversity in one fell swoop. Go on, knock yourself out!

Tuesday 10th January 2006
I'm very happy to report that the gigs are now trickling in. Starting this Sunday at Buzby's at 4.00pm we'll see if I can still remember the words (what am I saying - when did I ever remember them?). It's been good to have a rest, especially after the tour but now I'm ready to go back and do my thang once more. Hope you can join me - it wouldn't be the same without you! In case you didn't know, I also do birthday's and the very occasional wedding (weddings aren't usually very successful unless your nan likes Motorhead!).

Wednesday 4th January 2006
HAPPY NEW YEAR Y'ALL! Boy do I need to lose weight. I've had my annual hair cut so that's a start. I'm slowly getting back into the swing of it after the festivities and I'm looking forward to whatever 2006 has to throw at me. One of my first jobs will be taking advantage of my greatly increased web space. Fivetrees (my esteemed host) has upgraded all it's sites so I now have 250Meg rather than 100Meg. This means I can enlarge my Downloads content and give you folks some more free stuff to play. I'm also gonna overhaul my effects tutorials pages in readiness for my next DVD which will be on that very subject. I've learned a few bits and bobs since I wrote some of those articles and my approach to programming multi-effects processors has shifted somewhat. Also I want to share my current "Budgie Tour" sounds with you. By the end of the tour my guitars sounded fantastic and many of the sounds were surprisingly straightforward to set up.
This Christmas Lisa bought me a new device to help with my guitar lessons. It's a CD player which can slow CDs down, change the pitch (handy for detuned stuff) and loop a particular section repeatedly. This machine has already improved the efficiency of my teaching (most of which involves transcribing from CD) and makes the whole process more fun and less tiring. I would recommend it to any guitar teacher or transcriber. You spend more time actually transcribing than trying to pinpoint the start of the section on the CD. The machine is called the Tascam CD-GT1 Mk2.
I've got loads of new photos to add to the Raw Footage gallery thanks to those of you who've been kind enough to send them to me. If anyone would like to see their work up there, send me an e-mail - I'd love to see them. Thanks to Phil Neumann, Bert Mackenzie, Mikael Tholander and Corin Spinks for all your contributions to the archives!
If you've had a look on my gigs page you'll see it's still a bit bare at the moment! This will probably change soon (it usually does) and some of you have kindly given me venue details to look into. As you know I'll travel anywhere so if anybody would like me to play in their area, dig out the contact details of your local pub venue and e-mail them to me.

Blimey - 2 updates in a week? What's going on? Well, I just want to thank all my students for coming back to me after the long break - I don't take it for granted I promise! "Hi" to all my new ones and don't get buying guitars from Argos! You might get lucky and buy a great guitar but you'll more likely end up with something unplayable which will cost loads to put right. ALWAYS try before you buy and ignore any salesperson who tells you "it's just the newness!". Always buy your instrument from a well established reputable shop . These places usually give the best after sales service which, with guitars is essential. Ask about the after sales before you part with your money.

DVDs & CDs. My two solo albums and DVD are available to buy within the UK and at the moment you can order them by sending me a cheque, payable to Simon Lees to the following address: 7 Mill Green, Fordhouses, Wolverhampton WV10 6LX. The CDs are £12 each and the tuition DVD is £22 and this includes postage and packing. Don't forget to include your address and say whether you'd like them signed. I soon hope to organise a secure server so that you can buy them online.

Myspace The Myspace.com phenomena is catching on big-time so of couse I had to get one before one of the other Simon Lees' beat me to it. Type www.myspace.com/simonlees to view my very basic myspace profile and meet or even become my friends!

Gigs You're probably wondering where next year's gigs are. So am I! I'm gonna do my rounds over the Christmas period and try to drum up some bookings. A couple of venues have cancelled on me which will disappoint many. If you know any good pub venues which would be interested (wherever you are) e-mail me their details and I'll do my best to sort it.

Have a superb Christmas - I'm looking forward to it as usual and I'll catch up with you soon.

Friday 16th December 2005

Well folks, that's another tour done and dusted! Here's the overview of the last 7 gigs.

Sweden Trip
Arrived at Luton airport (ooh eeh ooh) and attempted to push 2 wonky trolleys full of gear and merch uphill over cobbles to the Departures area while Paul parked. Bought some Swedish money and met Steve Burke and Glyn. The plane ride was most pleasant and we met John the driver at Vasteras airport. Last time John drove a beaten up old Chevvy MPV but this time we had an old but very nice Towncar (as oppose to the beaten up ex-ganster Towncar we had in Pensylvannia). Checked into the Ibis (gotta be the worst hotel chain) and John took us for a Max burger. Way better than Mc Donalds!
The following day we went out for a wander around Vasteras - really nice town. Found a guitar shop, ate a proper hot dog (I love the Swedish mustard, man !) and headed off to the gig. It has to be said it was not as cold as I thought it would be. I thought the shock of being in Brazil one week and Sweden the next would kill me but it wasn't too bad!

Rockland Re-strung my Charvel - I only took one guitar this time. The backline/PA company provided a spare guitar in the shape of a Washburn Les Paul type. Our old friend Mikke took photos - some of which I'll try to stick up on the Raw Footage page soon. We had no support band this time - apparently the gig was sold out anyway so that made things a bit easier. One thing which was tricky - me and Burke kept getting shocks from the microphones. I don't know how Burke got through the gig but every time I went up to the mic. it was like sticking your tongue on 3 9 volt batteries. Despite that it was a great gig and we both suirvived so no harm done. After the show I had an interesting chat with a Columbian guy (John?) at the bar while eating my Pizza! I couldn't understand much of what he said but we had a good sing song of "Reaper and the Glory" which was ace!

Silja Festival Had a leisurely day, John bought his young son to meet us at the hotel before driving us to the ship. Waited in the VIP lounge and watched "Only When I Laugh" with Swedish subtitles! (the one where they try to quit smoking). Ken Hensley from Uriah Heep was also playing on the boat and he turned up with his Norweigan band. Didn't really have time for a shower before the gig. Just about managed to eat some gorgeous food from the buffet and have a quick chat with Ken's lead guitarist before it was time to hit the stage. Playing earlier than we did in 2003 made the whole trip more enjoyable. The crowd were excellent and there were no shocks this time! Went back to the main cabin and after we'd cooled down me and Burke went to watch Ken's band. Only watched a couple of tracks but they sounded good. God knows how they all fitted on the tiny stage! Went back to the Budgie HQ and watched part of a sloppy Robin Williams film until I couldn't stay awake any more. Somehow managed to stay in my cabin until 4pm the following day (as a call went out saying the cabins were about to be cleaned) when I ventured out to Budgie's main cabin - next door to the promoter's office at the front of the ship. Amazingly there was still some food and drink left! Kind of wished I'd have got up earlier when Glyn showed me the photos he'd taken of the scenery at midday. The promoter drove us back to the airport and we flew home in blue and yellow baby seats (I tell ya, Bryan Air doesn't get any better....).
Corny tune reared it's ugly head again and this time it was "Popeye the Sailor Man"

Ilfracombe Either way you look at it, it's a bloody long drive to Ilfracombe. We stopped off at THE pub in Roadwater where I had some Natch cider. Mighty fine. Quite an awkward load in. Difficult to park outside and all the gear has to be humped upstairs. The gig itself was quite uneventful. The sound engineer had his moaning head on (everything too much trouble) although afterwards he said he'd really enjoyed the gig which was nice. One thing which made me laugh - the door to the "dressing room" had to be kept shut to stop the sound escaping outside. When Paul disappeared in there the gaffer ran onstage and forced it shut so he couldn't get out to do his percussion. After the gig we had drinks and cheese sanwiches back at the hotel - a bit like last year. Very pleasant.

Honiton I'd been looking forward to this one for a while. My old mate Rich Smith from my first band "Osprey" lives nearby and he came to watch us. It was great catching up and it gave me something to focus on during the gig. Another upstairs hump, (this time a fire escape) the venue reminded me of my old school hall which is where Osprey did our first gig so that was kind of poignant. Mind you, the stage at our school hall was a damn site bigger than the stage at the Honiton Motel. Because space was extremely tight I kept the Les Paul in it's case and used a lead instead of my wireless. I still enjoyed the gig and I also enjoyed a drink with Steve and the 2 Blokes after the crowd had gone home! My cold which had started on Monday was getting really bad at this point. Corny tune = "Crossroads Theme" for the second time this tour.

Falmouth Quite a long drive to Falmouth. Had a hearty breakfast before hand at the Motel and some chips at a well hidden Chippy on the approach to Truro. The Princess Pavillion is a lovely venue. Great HK PA system and great sound engineer - the whole place reminded me of the Memorial Hall at Battle. The hotel left a lot to be desired - awful creaky beds and "public" bathrooms with panoramic views of whoever's inside. The weather was terrible too. Rained heavily all night. Ordered a Chinese from Panda House in Falmouth. Very nice meal - highly recommended. Interesting support band featuring a Danish guitarist. They played mostly instrumental stuff and the bass player did some cool things with a delay pedal. Very good gig although by now my cold was making things difficult. The following day I began to lose my voice and during my gig at West Bromwich that night I lost my head voice completely. My Neil Diamond version of Whole Lotta Rosie went down well though so it could have been worse.

Nuneaton Stairs again! Nice venue though. Perfect size for us - easily filled and nice high stage. Great HK PA and sound engineer and the lights were used to great effect during our show. We played well and it was, overall one of the best gigs of the tour. Only downside was the Chinese which was probably the worst I've ever had! Great to meet up with Neil from Cloven Hoof & Ozzmosis and John Woodberry - my original guitar student! One unusual thing was the condensation which was everywhere. My guitars were soaked before the show and I was frantically trying to wipe the water off before we started. Next time I might be tempted to leave my cases on the side of the stage rather than bring them out from the cold dressing room. Memorable moment - Burke dedicating Napoleon to our support band and asking me what they were called. I coudn't remember! Nice gesture though(!). My cold was still there and it was a real hassle trying to avoid getting cold whilst trying not to sweat too much humping the gear back downstairs.

Frome Drove myself and Lisa's brother Lee down to Frome. I took my car so I could bring my Marshalls home for Christmas. Lovely drive down, found the gig and realised I'd beaten Paul and Steve! Burke and Glyn had already got there and unloaded the van - they'd actually drove the van up to the edge of the stage - like the NEC - so all I had to do was connect my amps, pedals and wireless. Nice big venue. Earlier that day it had been used for a cattle market! Me and Lee went into the vibrant buzzing metropolis that is Frome to find hot food and despite waiting 15 mins for a small pizza we made it back in plenty of time to soundcheck. Watched Kortez our support band (I really liked one of their tunes) and then went on to play a great gig. I enjoyed this one immensley - nice big stage, good sound, good crowd. I enjoyed it so much that I nearly destroyed my left knee. Didn't even notice until sometime after the gig when I could hardly walk. During the early part of the show I saw blood pouring from my left index finger! I'm falling apart! Spent a bit of time signing stuff after the show which was really cool. Long drive back home in the fog - much of it behind some 4x4 doing 20mph. Great gig to finish the tour and now we're all totally buggered and looking forward to Christmas! Corny tune = "There's No Place Like Frome". Inspired or what? OK I know it's pronounced Frooooom but I'm from Wolverhampton.

But what of the Two Blokes?......... I'll tell ya......... 27 out of 27 UK gigs in 2005. What band on the planet has more dedicated fans? Thanks guys!

Wednesday 23rd November 2005

A long overdue newsletter is in order! Since the last Budgie gig in Swindon I've been on my "Summer" holiday and things are only just starting to get back to normal. Below are my already fading memories of the 2nd half of the main tour!

Crewe - Great gig as usual. First gig with my new "industrial strength" fan. I automatically set this to Max and the photos clearly show my hair almost blowing clean orrff. There is a set of photos from this gig taken by the extremely talented Jessica Patel. These can be viewed on her website Jessica Patel Serious Photography. Martin Kessel also has a page with photos from the same gig. Click HERE to view them. It was good to get the Les Paul back in action. The Piezo bridge is still knackered but there's a pretty convincing Acoustic simulator on the GT-8. Burke broke a string and although he had a spare bass he decided to change the string instead. To try and keep things going I played a crappy 12 bar type solo!

Stratford - Slowburner supported us again. Great band, very professional. Some drunk girl got thrown out for abusing the singer whilst he was singing! She'd tried to get in earlier for £2 insisting "the band" said it was OK! The crowd was a lot bigger than last time - always a good thing. My wireless battery died during "I Turned to Stone". Great sound engineer (same as last time). Not a bad gig. I've started playing corny tunes from backstage just as we go into the encore. Tonight's was the Crossroads Theme.

Derby - Good gig - once again we pulled a lot more people than last time. We always have a tough time trying to find the Flowerpot. Definately need Sat Nav for this one! Burke was really struggling with his cold and we were all really proud of him that he got through the gig. One of my gripes on this tour has been the fact that the sound engineers tend to pack their leads away before I get the chance to get mine off stage. This always leads to major spaghetti tangles and in the worst case damage to my leads and the things they're plugged into. Sid the sound guy made a real mess of my leads - such was his desire to get home early. Tonight's corny tune was "Robin Hood, Robin Hood, riding through the glen". The crowd actually sang along which was quite scary!

Wrexham - Weather was crap. Visited Pete Williamson on the way for tea as usual! Stood outside Yale's for about 30 mins while they opened up for us. No support band this time. Signed a couple of my solo albums before we went on stage which was most pleasant! Can't remember much about this gig but I'm sure it was a good one.

Bristol - You've probably noticed I haven't mentioned food yet. Well, I had my usual Chicken Teriaki foot long sub at Subway! (Hooray). Met John Allen and his friends in the foyer and had a nice chat with them. See y'all in Frome! Like last year, not a great turn out although those that were there made a great noise for us! Nice big stage and wonderful sound engineer make this an enjoyable gig. Tonight's corny tune was the theme to Casualty which, of course, is set in Bristol.

Cardiff - Stayed at Burke's overnight. Nice short journey to the Point. New PA system - sounded great. Once again we had a great sound engineer. I couldn't stack my Marshalls as the stage wasn't quite level so I put them side by side. It's amazing the drop in volume you get with both cabs on the floor. The support band was pretty cool. "Smoky Bacon" will live with me forever! Nice to hear a cover of Quo's "Rain". Stuart Cable, ex-Stereophonics drummer paid a visit to our dressing room. Cool guy with the wickedest Welsh accent I've ever heard! We actually sold out! The Point was full to capacity! Burke was amazed and really thrilled that we'd done that on his home turf. I played my socks off that night, it was a great occasion. Bloody hot though! Corny tune of the night? "We'll keep a welcome in the hillside... etc" Very poignant.

Deal - Stayed at Burke's again. Nice sunny day. Long drive to Deal, stopping off for coffee at Sainsbury's in Bracknell. We've found a little cut through which avoids part of the M25 and it's roadworks. Checked in at the hotel in Dover before continuing to Deal. Got to the venue in plenty of time. And I mean plenty of time. It took so long for the PA to get set up that we couldn't sound check before 8pm. Utterly bloody ridiculous. One of the sound engineer's asked Steve where he wanted the drum mics! I heard the sound engineer telling another assistant to "turn the Treble down". Suffice to say we felt slightly concerned about the sound. In the end I think they managed to pull it off and the sound was pretty good but it was a real nail biter. Special thanks to Phil Neumann for his services. Another really hot gig. After last night's excitement I was knackered. We ate after the show and somehow our food order was messed up. And they ran out of cider. Stayed up and sank a couple of bottles of wine with Steve back at the hotel. We needed it! By the way, tonight's corny tune was "White Cliffs of Dover".

Portsmouth - Picked Steve up (via KDG at Merthyr) and drove to Portsmouth. Had difficulty finding the hotel. Eventually got to the venue and started setting up. Not a great turn out this time. It's weird doing a Budgie gig with no stage but at least this gives you plenty of room to move without worrying about falling off! Juicy Lucy supported us. Good band and I must say my fan made their guitarist's hair look fantastic! Can't remember a huge amount about this gig but I think it was probably a good one. Corny tune? What shall we do with a Drunken Sailor.

Poole - I could gush forth pages about this superb gig. Mr Kypps is a great venue in every respect. Easily the best venue on the tour. We virtually sold it out as well. Like Cardiff I had to position my cabs side by side as the stage wasn't quite level but even this didn't marr my enjoyment. The sound engineer (Rich?) knew a couple of bands from my neck of the woods and it was nice talking about them. Bloody good engineer too, meticulous, even pedantic, but he knows his knobs! I was enjoying myself so much I made possibly the greatest blunder on the tour by hitting the wrong pedal during Napoleon. It was like World War 3 for a couple of seconds while I figured out what the hell was going on! Definately one of those moments when time slows down. Made a lot of people laugh (including the sound guy who was bent double). After the gig and with perfect timing, Glyn bought in the sumptious Chinese which we ate in the sumptious dressing room. Chatted with a cool guy from New Zealand who kept saying "Haard Act". Had a relaxing drink before heading back to the hotel. Corny tune? Theme from Captain Pugwash. A definate nautical feel to these two gigs.

Battle - Wasn't sure what to expect here. Great venue as it turned out. Apparently there had been complaints about noise so that got us worried. Wasn't too bad as it turned out although the sound engineer reckoned my guitar got louder after the 3rd song. Does a valve amp get louder when it's hot? I certainly didn't make any adjustments. Having heard a recording of the gig it definately got QUIETER after the 3rd song. This kind of thing annoys me. Decibel meters usually respond to mid-frequencies (i.e. guitar/vocal) yet the ones that cause the most complaints from neighbours etc tend to be the low frequencies (i.e. bass/drums). Half way through "Melt the Ice Away" Burke broke a string, replaced it with an old string and then half way through "Hot as a Docker's Armpit" broke it again. The first time it hapenned I made up a better solo than the one I played at Crewe. The challenge was to create ideas that aren't in my main solo so it didn't become tedious. I'd just about run out of ideas when Burke returned to the stage which couldn't have been timed better. The second time I wondered if Steve wanted to do a solo but he got up and left the kit so I followed him. It would have just been too cheesy for me to play another solo. When we came back on stage it looked as though some of the crowd had disappeared which was quite understandable.
We got back into it and at the end I think it had still been a great gig. Corny tune was "Bedshaped" by Keane who are from Battle. After the show we ate another fine Chinese and the female security guard made us all a cup of tea. You don't get THAT at the Renfrew Ferry!

Swindon - The final gig on the main leg of the tour was probably the most stressful. It was a nicer looking venue than the Queen's Tap but boy oh boy was it chaotic? We'd had a pleasant drive from Battle via Ripley for a pint at the Anchor (or was it the Crown? Maybe Crown & Anchor?). Anyway, very pleasant pub which doubled as a Thai restaurant where we were kept entertained by the barmaid who did some of the most obscure (and uncannily accurate) impressions. Anyone remember the female lead in the '80's cartoon "Captain Caveman"?
After this disturbing experience we continued to the venue which we eventually found. Nice easy load in (also easy for thieves). The dressing room was tiny and miles from the stage. There were 2 support bands (where there really wasn't room for all the gear). The sound engineer (Nick?) was very cool and I have to thank him for his patience. When the gig was over I bit anyone's head off within 50 yards who tried talkng to me (apologies for that!). Everyone was trying to get everything off at the same time. Some beer went all over my leads and the back of my pedalboard. It was all I could do to protect my guitars and gear. It was a f***ing nightmare. The actual gig was pretty good and the crowd were great but if we play here again, things will have to change. No corny tune tonight.

So not a great ending to the main leg of the tour. I have to say that my opinions and experiences don't necessarily reflect those of the rest of Budgie. What I've written is purely my perspective on the way things have gone and I've written it for my own benefit as much as anyone elses. Playing in Budgie has been (and continues to be) a great experience and I want to remember as much as I can.

And what of the Two Blokes? Well ladies and gents, they haven't missed a single Budgie show. That's 22 out of 22 folks! Will they make it to Sweden? I'll let you know.

We're off to Sweden tomorrow where we kind of know what to expect as it's a repeat of a trip we made 2 years ago. Next week we're in Devon and Cornwall and the following week we're in the Midlands and Somerset. Don't forget I've got a few one-man-shows dotted around in-between the Budgie gigs. Check my gig-list for details. It's great that a couple of Budgie fans who saw us in Stratford made the journey to Coseley last week for my one-man gig at the Horse and Jockey (despite one of them having a broken arm!)

New Gig! - I have a one-man-gig in Warrington on Sat 17th December at a pub called the Seven Woods. I don't often take my one-man-show outside the Midlands but if anyone would like to bring me to their neck of the woods I don't mind travelling. I also do parties!

Tuesday 4th October 2005

We're halfway through the main bulk of tour dates and I've finally got a few minutes to write a newsletter. Don't forget, I have copies of my CDs and DVDs on me at each gig. If you can find me, you can buy one. Signed if necessary!

Gig Diary - the first half....
Sheffield was a good solid gig to start the tour despite being a bugger to find (not knowing Sheffield). After soundcheck I briefly bumped into Terry from Rotherham - a self- confessed "Budgie Nut" who I've met a few times at Budgie gigs. Great turnout for the first night and the sound was pretty good. The gaffer has changed his MO giving us stew instead of Chilli Con Carne. Nice to be fed though - doesn't always happen! The entourage backstage kept us entertained. "Hi" to the South African dude. Who the hell was that guy who kept shouting "30 years"?. Hilarious. The hotel had only booked one breakfast between two of us. That was awkward but got sorted eventually.

Newcastle - as always was where we got the warmest welcome. I wish we could take you guys and transport you all to each gig! I apologise if I was a bit short with anyone on the night - the facilities at Trillians are such that it's extremely difficult to come off stage, chill out and pack up at the end of the night. The gaffer does his best with what he's got but what's he got? (Not a lot... erm..). I was physically and emotionally exhausted by the time we came to leave. Quick food update - Aberdeen Angus burger and chips. The best burger on the planet - period. I'll say "Hi" at this point to Brian & Joy who bought me a pint and came to see us later on in the tour. I also have to mention a guy from Poland who barged into the kitchen saying "I like the old Budgie, I don't like the new Budgie". I might normally have been offended but he sounded like Borat so I just laughed at him. Hi to the Russian couple who came too.

Glasgow - Pleasant trip through the Northumberland National Park. Stopped at Jedburgh for lunch at a pensioner filled cafe. Beautiful Abbey - must explore at some point. Got to Glasgow, drove past Innes from Raar and checked into hotel. Drove to the Ferry and debated whether the gig was going to be a problem. The Ferry has provided me with some of my best Budgie memories but things have changed. There are new sound level restrictions and the whole interior looks like a bloody wine bar. Many people stayed away as a result and although it was still a good night it was a mere shadow of it's former self. To be fair the stage is now wider and they provided us with food (which is a first) but I think we need an alternative Glasgow venue. It was great to see Raar again. Innes has taken over "croaky voice" duties from Tweezer who left earlier this year and I must say does it extremely well. New drummer "Hand-Grenade" did a great job and is a bloody nice bloke to boot. The event of the night (apart from my pin striped shirt) was Raar getting told to stop by the gaffer because they were too loud. Incredible. I need to say a HUGE THANK YOU to Mr and Mrs John Ritchie for bringing us a whole bunch of sandwiches and tins of cake. Honest to God it was an AWESOME spread and kept us going all through the Edinburgh trip. John also gave me a special slide which can be turned around to allow normal play. I wore the thing all night and used it quite successfully on Hot as a Docker's Armpit but when it came to Napoleon (the main reason for using it) I was so sweaty the thing was turning round by itself so it wasn't quite so cool. Looked good though!

Edinburgh - There was no room at the inn (Travel Inn) so we stayed at Lizzie and Betty's. There is a B&B on the East side of town called "The Gates" Tel. 0131 669 2889. Run by two lovely ladies it was like staying at yer mum's. It was Steve's birthday so me and Glyn (our new roadie) took the bus into town to buy a card and some wine along with a bit of sightseeing. The gig itself was something else. I've already commented on the difficulties at Trillians. Multiply by 10 and you have Bannerman's. The gig was so hot you couldn't breathe and depite wearing my Goldie Lookin' Chain sweatband, my sweat caused the piezo pickup on my Les Paul to short out. Burke was having to miss lines out as he was on the verge of collapse and Steve was totally knackered. I later found out they switched the Air Con off as it messes with the PA. At the end of the show we made our way through the crowd to the "dressing room" (beer cellar) only to find it was locked and there were people behind us trying to get to the toilets. A Spinal Tap situation if there ever was one. All in all an exhausting gig and one never to be repeated despite a pretty good crowd.

Northampton - Pleasant venue - like a minature NEC! Big sound system and good sound engineers. I decided to try and maximise my new stereo sounds by putting one of my Marshall cabs either side of the stage. No idea whether it worked but the onstage sound was like trying to drive through fog. While Raar soundchecked I Tabbed out "Hot Fudge" by Robbie Williams for one of my students who will probably prefer to remain nameless! Raar got a very quiet reception which was a shame 'cause despite string breakages they played really well. And those trousers! Go well with my shirt I reckon! The crowd warmed up for us so it wasn't a bad gig. Until my Les Paul started playing up during Breadfan. The Piezo pickup wasn't working after Edinburgh so I re-programmed my GT-8 to get an acoustic sound using the Guitar Simulator. It turns out the piezo pickup was affecting magnetic pickups and I had to whoop the guitar's ass to get it through the last song.

Oxford - Realised I'd left my hair brush at home so quickly found Boots and bought a Salon Performance vent brush. Man that thing goes through your hair like a blowtorch. Had breakfast at Cromwells in Northampton where we waited approx 6 hours to eat.
Anyways, a short hop to Oxford and we chilled in the hotel for a wee while. I like the Zodiac - good crowd - great sound engineers, good Chinese a few doors down. Tidy mun. Met Tony and gave him the Robbie Tab. ....oops. Apparently the venue hadn't advertised the gig so up until about 5 minutes before we went on stage there were about 15 people in. It got better but we still only got about half what we normally get. I tried the Les Paul during soundcheck but it was totally buggered. I used the Charvel for the gig (still a fantastic guitar) but had to be extra careful as I no longer had a spare. After a record breaking pack-up we stopped off at "Simon's Fish and Chips" on the Cowley Road for more sustenance. Missed the turning to Aylesbury and carried on towards London. Bugger. Talon (Eagles tribute) were staying at the hotel. Following morning me and Steve ate a hearty Subway baguette while the other guys enjoyed a thoroughly crap breakfast in the market.

London - The Underworld is a great gig for us - always rammed to capacity and tonight was no exception. After Steve did some spectacular Sweet Fast Talking the traffic wardens granted us 5 whole minutes to empty the van and load in. Soundcheck came and went and I met up with my mate Dave, his cousin Will and Aloo Raeel outside the Tube station. A chap named Dave Leach bought me a bottle of Magners Irish cider. Bit like Old English but bigger and cleverer. Watched most of Raar's set. They got a great reception this time - those trousers working better possibly! Rory very kindly lent me his Strat as a backup in case I broke a string on my Charvel and Innes gave me a new T-shirt! It was a very hot gig (not like Edinburgh) and we had to pack - up very soon after playing. I got my shorts on and my top off and just about managed to get my leads out of harm's way before they were mangled by the venue crew. We met the drummer from Breed 77 (Pete Chichon) outside after and signed his Budgie albums! Totally cool! Apparently Matthew Wright (of Wright Stuff fame) was at the gig too. No food until the following morning when me and Steve had a McDonalds by the hotel in Yeading.

Brighton - Very pleasant drive to Crawley and had a pint in the Goff Arms? At the gig we realised the Labour Party conference was on which was funny as Burke gets very wound up by Tony Blair (he really needs to stop reading the Daily Mail). Brighton will always have special memories for me because for the first time on this tour the crowd actually sang along to my guitar solo. I've included a sing along bit this year and the vast majority of people just go "yeah" rather than "NA-NA NA NA". Bloody great. Excellent gig although I think I killed myself in London so I didn't have much energy left. Got a great response from the crowd so mission accomplished. Sadly this gig was the last time we'll see Raar for a while and once again Rory let me borrow his Strat for a backup which, thankfully I didn't have to use. Cheers mate.

Liverpool - Got to the venue late due to traffic and not knowing Liverpool. No problem though, thanks to extremely professional sound engineers who got us perfectly soundchecked in the time it took to run through "I Turned to Stone". Great facilities - Huge dressing room etc. Even sandwiches and beer! (although no cider). Overall I'd recommend this venue but there are a couple of low doorways where I banged my head and gave myself concussion (seriously!). The gig was pretty good and once again the crowd sang to my sing-along-bits. Also this was the first time I'd heard my stereo sounds properly. I've been tweaking my sounds as the tour's progressed and they are damn near perfect. When I get the chance I will write a feature about how I got my new sounds on the Free Tutorials page. Hotel was pretty close so we had a couple of Magners in the hotel bar afterwards.

Bradford - My head was still spinning after last night's abuse so I slept most of the way to Bradford. Found the hotel first and chilled out and freshened up before going to Rio's. I don't know why but I enjoyed the Rio gig more than any other so far this tour. I just felt relaxed and happy (probably the concussion). It was a good gig with a very funny guy (made me laugh) in the audience from Poland. He had travelled with some friends and wanted to know when we would be gigging in Poland again. They kept asking for "Baby Please Don't Go". Once again, mad panic after the show to pack the gear away (and take it upstairs so it could be locked in the dressing room). I've been carrying two Pot Noodles with me since the start of the tour and tonight was the closest I'd come to eating them. But I resisted knowing that at least we'd get a proper breakfast in the morning.

Ashton-Under-Lyne - As we had a whole day to travel 37miles we decided to do what I'd been wanting to do since Sheffield. We visited the Countess Tea Rooms at Wortley. Three old dears work together to bring you the most fantastic tea and cakes in the World. Ever. You could get altitude sickness just looking at the mountainous peaks of the lemon merringue. The phone number is 0114 288 3502 and it's a must do if you're travelling in Southern Yorkshire. The gig? Great! We had Authority supporting us and they were one hell of a band. Real virtuoso stuff. The lead guitarist is Sam Lees. Coincidence? You decide.... Despite lack of stage I really enjoyed this gig too. Thanks to Brian & Joy again for supplying me with Strongbow. Hope you enjoyed the CDs guys. I had a surprise visit from Dave and Manda who are regulars at my One-Man-Show which topped the night off for me.

I've mentioned many people who've made the first leg of the tour memorable but a special mention, nay, dedication, needs to go out to the Two Blokes who have acheived an all time high score of 11 gigs out of a possible 11. They come to our shows, buy me Strongbow at every opportunity, they never hassle us - they are simply magnificent. Thanks guys!

Wednesday 14th September (D-Day!) 2005

Well, today's the day then! The Budgie 2005 tour kicks off in Sheffield. It's a great venue to start the tour - we always get fed well at the Boardwalk! We have some new tracks to play along with the old favourites and I hope to catch up with as many people as poss! My guitar sound is radically different this year and Burke's bass is really singing thanks to a new neck (you won't spot it!) and a re-wired pickup.
I'll be carrying copies of my 2 solo albums along with my new Guitar Tuition DVD in case anyone wants a copy and it goes without saying I'll sign them if you wish. Albums are £10 each and my DVD will be £20 which is a whopping £2 off the retail price!

NEW DVD
Yes, you heard right! My new Guitar Tuition DVD is now available and on sale. At the moment you can buy it direct from me at the gigs or from MPEG UK on their secure server. I've put a few details on my Guitar Tuition page including the cover pic. It's taken 7 years of development and over 6 months to produce but I think the results are fantastic. A big thank you to Mike de Jager for all his help and hard work in producing the product.

Monday 15th August 2005
I've finally put the Budgie Tour dates on my giglist. I've included links to the venues where possible along with maps, addresses and 'phone numbers. It's always worth checking with the venue before you set off to find out what time we'll be on stage as this can vary wildly. We never seem to know until we arrive! You'll notice there are no gigs in the West Midlands. The most local gigs are Stratford, Derby and Crewe in October and Nuneaton in December. My favourite of those is probably the Limelight in Crewe but they're all pretty good.
My tuition DVD is due to go into production this week so as soon as it's ready I'll be shouting it from the rooftops! It's been a long time coming and many hours (indeed years) have gone into its development so I'm hoping it will be successful.
That's all the news for now - expect more as the tour approaches!
Tuesday 28th June 2005
I've just received some pics from v-rats bassist/vocalist Pete "MZ" Emms taken at last weeks "Victim of Changes" recording session. I've stuck them in a new gallery on the Raw Footage pages. Check 'em out! I've also managed to get a second video on my Downloads page. This is quite an old one from Oakengates Theatre in Telford but there are some good camera shots. Again it's a huge file so it could take a while to download. Enjoy.
Wednesday 15th June 2005

Just a quickie before I drive to Cardiff to continue work on the new Budgie album. I've added some new dates to my Giglist and one or two have been changed so please check before you set off to the wrong venue!
I've added a video MPEG to my Downloads page. This is my Stars in Their Eyes appearance and will be available for a limited time. I also have a video clip of my gig at Oakengates Theatre from 1998 which is pretty cool. I must thank Shep from Wellington for converting these clips to Mpegs for me. Cheers mate! The files are roughly 30 Meg each so they will take a while to save to your hard drive.

The dates for the Budgie tour have been officially announced and I will put them on my gigs page when I get the chance.

Tuesday 24th May 2005
I've changed the Downloads on both the Merchandise page and the Sounds page so you can now listen to a couple of tracks from my Freethinka album. The MP3s are pretty big and to play them it's best to right click on the link and "Save Target As" to save to your hard drive. The quality is far better than the old download files so you can now hear the tracks in all their glory.
I had the pleasure of meeting the guys from Europe at their Norwich gig last week. It was my birthday and I was made to feel most welcome backstage after their superb show. A big "Hi" to Ian, John N, Joey, John L, Mic & Danny. I shall never forget it!
This evening I'm gonna be working on my new Guitar Tuition DVD with producer Mike de Jager. Most of the recording has been done and it's looking pretty good. The DVD focuses on my unique method of visualising scales on the fretboard and I have written many versions of a book to explain how this works. I feel the DVD will make the method much clearer and much more entertaining. When it's ready I'll let you know and hopefully get one or two free clips to download.
As I mentioned in my February news I've bought the new Boss GT-8 Pre-Amp/Processor. It's quite a beast! I'll be putting some settings on my Tutorials page in the near future. I've been using it to record demos for the new Budgie album in Burke's studio and I've got some killer sounds including some really cool "honest to goodness" basic rhythm and lead sounds. Easily the best direct recording sounds I've ever heard. I've yet to try it through the Marshalls but I expect to be totally blown away and I look forward to blowing y'all away on this year's UK tour which should commence in the Autumn!
I'm back in the studio with Al Atkins next month to record another track for his Demon Deceiver album. Al decided to swap one of the tracks as he felt the song didn't sit comfortably with the rest of the album. The track we'll be recording is a classic Judas Priest song called "Victim of Changes" which Al wrote while he was still in the band.

Friday 22nd April 2005
I've put lots of new pics on my Raw Footage Gallery. These are from Budgie gigs in Swindon and Oxford as well as some more Guest Guitar pics (including a very nice Zakk Wylde signature). You'll find some new gigs on the Gigs page too so check that out. Nothing significant to report hence the lack of news. Me and Burke are still working on new songs for the new Budgie album and we're determined to get it finished before the next UK tour.

Tuesday 29th March 2005
Long time no news eh? Well it's partly through being so damn busy and partly 'cause I spent a week in the gorgeous (& cheap) resort of El Gouna on the Red Sea. While I was there I had my first go at scuba diving and I'd like to thank Leive Christiaens of the Emperor Diving school in Hurghada for her expert tuition. I'm hoping to continue learning to dive in the summer and get my PADI certificate.
Last weekend I played a couple of new gigs - thanks to everyone for turning up, they were great nights. So great in fact that I managed to kill one of my bass bins so that's my first job this morning! The Les Paul hasn't been out for a while - I'll bring it out around the middle of the month where it should be safe. I bought a new Hiscox case for it so the original can be stored and protected. A big THANK YOU to Rob at Hiscox for fixing one of my old cases - it's now ready to be kicked around by airport staff once more.
I've just ordered some more copies of my first CD "My World". At some point in the near future I'll get some MP3s on the site so you can hear clips from both albums and they will both be available to buy from the online shop
Wednesday 2nd March 2005
I recently bought a new CD which was put together by some members of the Bandolier newsgroup. The CD is called "In For the Trill" and features cover versions of Budgie songs recorded by actual fans of the band. The CD features some excellent playing along with some slightly bizarre versions of Budgie songs and I would highly recommend it. There are only 150 of these CDs being produced so you need to be quick if you want to grab one and you can find out how to do so by clicking HERE or HERE. All proceeds go to a medical research charity. I must stress that Budgie have had no involvment with the production of the CD whatsoever but I think it's pretty cool that our fans wanted to honour us in this way. Nice one guys!
Talking of new albums, I'm off to Cardiff shortly to continue work on the new Budgie album. Progress is still pretty slow but I compare it to doing up a house (bear with me!). We gutted our house before we moved in and spent 12 long weeks doing it up. Up to a few days before it still looked like a wreck and during the final week, suddenly, the carpets were fitted, the furntiture was moved in, the drapes and doors were hung - virtually overnight it became a proper house (and we are talking the full Carol Smiley). This is how I feel the new Budgie album will happen. It will be worth the wait.

Monday 21st February 2005
I've just been listening to my contributions to an album by Krankschaft called Der Vaterland. The singer/guitarist/writer Neil Murray contacted me last year to ask me to put some solos on a few of his songs which I did in my studio and promptly forgot about! It sounds great and if you'd like to find out more check out Neil's web site HERE.
On Friday I went to Mad Hat studios to record some solos on the last track on Al Atkins' new album Demon Deceiver (for which I wrote the title track). I left my house at 4.15pm and was back at 6.30pm having recorded a 3min, guitar solo, some huge gothic sounding harmonies and had a cup of tea and a chat! I love doing this kind of stuff and I may be doing a similar thing with Raar who are working on their new album this month.
Predictably I've bought the Slash signature Gibson Les Paul I played on Sat 29th Jan! (see news, 30th Jan). It's just one of those guitars that you can't stop playing and I broke my first string during last night's gig! (I stopped playing it then obviously although not until I'd finished the song - something which is impossible on my other guitars!). My spending spree will continue shortly as I'm planning to upgrade my pedals to a Boss GT-8. I'll use this on the Budgie gigs as well as the new Budgie album and it'll enable me to use stuff like Wah and other cool sounds. Click HERE followed by "Interactive", "GT-8"; "Video Demo" to watch a guy demonstrating it at the NAAM show.

Wednesday 9th February 2005
I've just found a review of Freethinka which makes some fun reading. Click HERE to read it.

Friday 4th February 2005
I've added some new pages to the Raw Footage gallery. Check them out!

Sunday 30th January 2005
Gigs Update:
The Haygate gig for next Saturday has been moved to Saturday March 12th. The Star in Wednesfield is undergoing a change of management so the 19th is uncertain at the moment. I'll update the gigs page as and when I know exactly what's happening.

Work on the new Budgie album is continuing and I'm happy to report that progress seems to be picking up speed. It's still pointless to try and speculate a release date but "There's a light......" at the end of the tunnel!

I often get guitarists bringing their treasured instruments to my gigs for me to play (what a great job!). I'll be putting some photos on my Raw Footage gallery in the near future. Last night I had the pleasure of playing a Slash signature Les Paul which I've borrowed from one of my students, Mr Tony Frewin. I happened to mention to Tony that I'm considering getting a Les Paul and he very generously offered to lend me his to see how I got on with it. What a machine! I've found that as with most guitars you get great Les Pauls and some pretty ropey ones. My old Les Paul was thoroughly uninspiring so I got rid of it but I've played a few recently which have set my world on fire! I'm gonna take my time, shop around and when I find the right one I will snap it up. In the meantime I'd like to thank Tony for trusting me with what is basically a serious investment (and bloody good fun!).

Monday 17th January 2005
Just to let you know, the gig list has been updated. Note the March gig at the Pyle Cock has been moved to the 25th Feb. If anyone has difficulty reading the gig list please let me know.

Wednesday 12th January 2005
Happy New Year! Just a quickie because I'm heading off to Burke's today to continue working on the new Budgie album. Thanks to everyone for the Christmas wishes - I hope you all had a good one. It's been the strangest Christmas I can remember. I normally work all over the holiday period but this year I just couldn't get my head around it! Still I'm back up to speed now and the first 3 gigs of the year went really well. I've still got it! (It never left me!). One or two new gigs appearing on the gig list so check them out if you can. A big THANK YOU to those kind people who sent me their photos from our tour. I'll be posting some of them up on my Raw Footage page soon. Right then, I'm off - see ya soon!

Friday 17th December 2004
Hi Folks - long time no news! Well I've been pretty busy I guess and below I've written a kind of "tour diary" of some of the more memorable parts. I may add to this as more things come back to me! I'll also be adding some links to some of the support band's web sites. It's been nice meeting them. To everyone who's turned up to the shows and given us their support THANK YOU!! We're all gonna chill out over Christmas and try and get our heads back to normal. Maybe we'll eventually work out what day it is who knows? Early in Jan I'll be off to Cardiff to continue working on material for the new Budgie album which we're all looking forward to.

My 2005 gig page has been updated and very sparse it looks too. It should fill up a bit in the next few weeks and if anyone would like to see my one-man-show near them - tell your local boozer to drop me a line!

It's been a great year and I'm looking forward to the next one! Have yourselves a superb Christmas and a truly splendid 2005!

Simon

Budgie 2004 Winter Tour Highlights (& Lowlights) 2004
Wrexham: Supported by my old bandmates. Two Blokes. See previous News.

Ashton-Under-Lyne:
Bad hair day - re-washed it at hotel before soundcheck. Two Blokes. Curry.

Workington: Paul's car broke down opposite Ashton Police Station and took 4 hours to fix. My gear was set up perfectly upon arrival. Dodgy glam rock support band! Guy in audience slept through our show with his mouth wide open. May have been dead. D string saddle shot forward simulating string breakage half way through In For the Kill. Managed to change guitar just before the solo. Yay! Two Blokes were the only people standing! My first taste of Thatchers from 24 hour Tesco. Watched dodgy film with no legged bloke doing martial arts.

Leicester: Stuck in Brum traffic for hour and a half. Subway (Chicken Teriyaki 12" with jalepenos) for tea!. My wireless screwed up due to spotlight overheating it. Used lead instead. Best audience so far.

Newcastle: First repeat gig from last year. Stopped in Alston for a cuppa. Found the venue and hotel easily. Separate rooms - Yay! Loads of Strongbow! Good food, good crowd, nice gig.

Middlesborough: Scary looking town! Nice hotel. Humping gear upstairs. Really low attendance. Rich (sound engineer) last gig.

Crewe: 2nd repeat gig from last year. Went for it! Two Blokes. Good night. Drove to Carlisle after gig to reduce travelling next day. First gig with Eddie driving the van.

Dundee: Near fight in Asda car park over parking. First of many supermarket breakfasts. My first trip over Forth Road Bridge. What are the twin "Ayres Rocks" outside Edinburgh? Picturesque drive to Dundee (City of Discovery). Humped gear up narrow stairs. Hotel not as bad as it looked! (Auld Steeple Hotel). Raar supported us. My first taste of Jagermeister in a test tube! Small painfully quiet crowd. No encore. Sound engineer kept calling me "Ken". No en-suite!

Edinburgh: Breakfast in Tesco. No fighting. Sunny. Tay Bridge looks gorgeous. Post offices shut 'till 2pm. Got totally lost in Edinburgh trying to find hotel in Duddingston. Beautiful city. Nice venue - too few people. Great atmosphere though. Wireless battery ran out half way through Breadfan reprise. Finished gig trapped by my lead by my stack. Raar supported again. Wore my Raar T shirt for the gig! A guy called me "Jimmy" outside gig. Back in hotel bar at 10.45pm! Watched bits of Children in Need with Ozzy and Sharon. Great night.

Glasgow: Watched prog about Incredibles before laeving for Glasgow. Looks like a good film. Nice hotel (Moodiesburn). Single rooms again Yay!. Found Ferry easily. Drier than last year! Chinky for tea! Raar supported us again. Much improved stage. Wore my Raar T-shirt again! Brilliant gig. One of the best ever. Neanderthal security guard not letting people who've travelled from South Africa and Sweden backstage. Two Blokes. Steve left drum stool in Edinburgh. Used a bench from the ladies toilet! Phantom Riffage also supported. Near fight backstage between security guard and Raar. Couple of drinks in Hotel bar afterwards. Freezing! Day Off: Drove back to Edinburgh to collect Steve's drum stool. Drove to Aberdeen. Long drive. Chinky near hotel. One drink then back to room at 8.15 to watch bits of 4 Weddings, change strings and soak in bath. Single rooms Yay!

Aberdeen: Good breakfast. Realised I'd put wrong strings on. Re-set trem for lighter strings. Weird! Watched weather report. Outlook mild thank god. Ukraine election protests. Nice venue. Awesome equipment. Engineers too scared to use it. Good healthy food at gig thanks to Marge! Support band Noise Pollution! (Not if these engineers can help it!). Good turnout. Easy load in/out. Silly cow sound engineer gave my set list away! Drove back to Stirling via the Aberdeen Lighthouse (twice!). Spooky moonlit roads. Got to bed at 4am.

Rochdale: Long drive from Stirling. Stopped at Asda in Carlisle again for breakfast! Slight trouble finding Sudden Social Club. Tiny stage, too many bodies all over it. Good PA system. Burke got a nasty buzz from his bass. Tried fixing it in the ridiculously small "Dressing Room". Problems with hotel - double booked. A member of the audience helped out with accommodation. Steve and Burke managed to get a room from hell. Me and Paul drove back home. Boneyard Dogs supported. Great band. Pretty good gig in the end but overall, one to forget.

Sheffield: Weird being at home again. Hassle free journey. Great being on a different motorway (M1 instead of M6!). Found venue fairly easily. Me and Paul set stuff up while Burke and Steve tried to catch up on sleep. Nice easy set up. Relaxed in hotel after soundcheck and a good meal (of chilli!). Started watching Steven Segall film. Left just in time for a quick chat with Terry and the Two Blokes before gig. Good gig, good food, great attendance.

Swindon: First 3 remasters delivered direct to Queen's Tap. Looked really good. Bought me and Steve a pint (rare!). Met Tony and Jerry from my masterclass back in April. They brought their mates, pub was totally packed out. Couple from Poland came, & a girl from Brazil! Two Blokes. Good gig.

Bristol: Drove round a couple of times before finding Bierkeller. Simon & Keith came to sell our merch. Very good sound engineers - great stage. My back went earlier today so I was really uncomfortable. Re-strung Charvel with proper strings. Re-set trem. Went out for food after soundcheck. Found a Subway and repeated Leicester's feast. Got back early for gig. Two Blokes. Met Ray Phillips for the first time briefly. Ben Bartlett from Guitarist magazine came and took photos. Gave us a CD of his band playing Parents. Kick ass show despite small crowd.

Rhyl: Drove myself to Rhyl. Great cups of tea and pizza from Harold the promoter. Plenty of roadies helped carry the gear up narrow stairs. Support band had some interesting pedals and sounds. Watched Tabby singing "Livin on a Prayer" on the X factor in Burke's room. Excellent crowd, Two Blokes, Axel Thomas! Packed away immediately after gig. Drove Eddie back to Brum. Knackered!

Portsmouth: Nightmare finding bed & breakfast. Small stage, ended up as the drum riser. Promoter showed us Polish Budgie bootleg CD with parrot on the front! Mike Sanchez played in posh room next door. Axel bought me a pint! Firgarden supported - good band. I was late getting changed talking to Tom & Jake from Firegarden! Good gig.

Oxford: Burke, Steve got there early & put my Marshalls up. Great to play Zodiac again. Therapy? were playing upstairs. Had a chinky from down the road. Nice easy gig thanks to professional sound engineer!

Stratford: Painfully small PA which actually sounded really good! Young sound engineer did an excellent job. Bought Steve and Si & Keith a pint - then had to sit down ha ha! Slowburner supported; singer looked like JT! Sang like Paul Rodgers. Really good band. Tiny stage so their drummer only used Kick & snare! Recognised the venue from my birthday weekend. Good crowd. Idiots knocked over Burke's mic stand. Two Blokes handled it well! Security eventually kicked them out. Took a while to settle down but eventually it turned into a good gig.

Brighton: Simon and Keith came to this one. High stage. Live Wire supported - good AC/DC tribute with 2 singers. Met the guy who took the live photos for the In For the Kill album. He took some more which was a shame since I hadn't had time to shower! Had tuning problems with my Charvel so I had to use my Peavey. The bridge pickup had dropped since I last used it and I couldn't get enough power so the gig became hard work. Sound engineer kept disappearing. Crowd was superb though - screaming young girls in the front row! Pretty rare at a Budgie gig but most welcome! Briefly met the old Budgie manager Graham. Two Blokes! Long drive home via kebab shop!

Camden: Managed to find venue easily but parking was a nightmare. 20p for 5mins!! Very laid back staff. A guy took some cool pics for a Spanish Classic Rock magazine. Forgot to change the battery in my wireless so used my new 25 foot leads! Met my mate Dave and went for chicken burger meal round the corner. Got back and met my cousin Rob in the bar. Support band finished early due to confusion with the lights. The place was heaving and we got the best response so far in England. Possibly even better than Glasgow though that's arguable! Two Blokes (obvoiusly!) & Axel. Phenomenal gig. Got lost coming home and got to bed at 5am!

Dudley: My home gig. Dumpy's Rusty Nuts supported. Poorly attended but we got well fed as usual. On stage sound was terrible. Two Blokes! (About the only ones who came to the front). Very disappointing gig overall.

Ilfracombe: Stopped off in Minehead for a cuppa by the harbour. Long drive but arrived about the same time as the van. Awkward load in and odd looking stage with a fence all around. Soundcheck was dodgy but finally sorted. Elixir supported. Classic early '80s metal. Good stuff! Cafe over the road sold dangerous chicken. No cider in the venue. The gig itself went really well and we all enjoyed it. Two Blokes! The hotel kept the bar open and we sat with Elixir exchanging tour tales and getting quite drunk until the early hours!

Thursday 4th November 2004
Well, the first gig of the tour went pretty smoothly. Here's how my day went:- Checked my guitars, packed all my leads and sorted out the stage outfit! I'd re-strung my guitars on Monday to let the strings bed in slowly. When I fine-tuned the Charvel the B string snapped! Unbelievable! Fitted another B string and then went to the gym for a purely CV session. I figured my arms would get enough excersise at the gig (and they did!). If anyone reading this uses the rowing machine, my current record for a 25 min. row is 6465m which I did on Tuesday! Paul picked me up in the "Limo" around 2-ish and as we were in plenty of time we stopped off at PR man Pete Williamson's place for a cuppa. Most civilised. Found the venue, Steve Burke and soundman Richard were just unloading the van when we arrived. Yale's is a real echoey venue - like a sports hall - so it's a tricky job getting a good sound in there but Richard is bloody good at what he does and sorted it in no time. The biggest shock for me was when our support band walked in. Two of the guys used to be in Tantrum - a band I played in 10 years ago! Their band is called "Flynch" and I've added a link to their web site from my ever expanding links pages. Really good to see Luke and Barry again. We were still eating when they kicked off their set but I managed to catch about 4 songs and they sounded great. Luke doing loads of cool high stuff on his bass and Barry literally beating the crap out of his kit but with some finesse! Hard, heavy with a funky edge. Check 'em out. (The CD sounds cool too - nice one guys!). One of my students, Rob came up with his wife Deb and bought me a pint which was just the job (cheers guys!). They've seen my one-man-show many times but this is the first time they'd seen me in a band so that was cool. The 2 Blokes (aka Chris and Tony) were also in the crowd. I wonder how many gigs they'll be able to get to on this tour (they usually make most of 'em!). As for the gig itself, I was a little bit nervous about how the new songs in the set would go. I need not have worried. Whilst not flawless they were tight enough and that little bit of danger made the experience a lot of fun! Apart from Steve's brand new top-of-the-range DW drum stool giving up halfway through the 3rd song, the gig went smoothly. This was also the first gig for my new Marshall set up and it sounded gorgeous! At the end of the night Burke, Steve and Richard went back to their hotel while me and Paul headed back home, relieved that the first show was under our belt.

Friday 29th October 2004
Just a quick note to anyone who was coming to Buzby's this Sunday. The venue is now under new management and no longer has live bands/artists. Shame, it was a good place to play. A big THANK YOU to the anonymous tip-off last night. I might have turned up otherwise!
The Budgie tour kicks off next week and rehearsals have gone really well so it'll be fun to see how the first few shows go! If anyone sees me before the show, mine's a Strongbow!!

Friday 1st October 2004
The Budgie Tour 2004 has been organised and the details including maps and web sites (where possible) are on my November and December gig pages. The Wulfrun gig has been cancelled, so the nearest "Black Country" gig will be JB's in Dudley (Wed. 8th Dec) where we played last year. We are currently working on a slightly updated set for the tour which will feature songs that Budgie haven't played for a long time. Work is continuing on the new material although due to various commitments outside the band, progress is painfully slow.
I've just been looking through my gig pages for this year and although it's been the most interesting year ever for travelling, the gigs have been pretty sparse. I must get my finger out for next year! If anybody knows of a decent pub venue where classic rock is appreciated - let me know!

Monday 13th September 2004
Just got back from 2 weeks of chillin' on the Greek island of Kos. Apologies if anyone's tried to contact me but I'm back now. There is a new video on Mike de Jager's web site of the last recording I did with Al Atkins back in May. The video is a mixture of live footage from Al's USA gigs in March along with the actual recording session and I think Mike's done a great job of editing the thing together. To watch the video you first need to click www.mpeguk.com, then go to the Video Gallery. Then just click on "Al Atkins Cradle to the Grave" and enjoy. I look a bit serious on the vid because Al decided at the last minute to speed up the tempo which made the solo almost unplayable but (pro that I am!) I managed it.

Thursday 12th August 2004
Under the stern (but fair) tutelege of the Bacon Sandwich Workshop I now have the knowledge to create new web pages within this web site.
There's now a whole bunch of new photos on a new series of pages called "Raw Footage". These photos have been done in a different style to the rest of the gallery pages and at some stage they may get processed further. Most of the photos have been kindly donated by Budgie fans who came to the gigs. There are some really great shots here and I'm really proud to be able to display them within my web site. Keep checking back because I will be adding new photos a lot more frequently. If you want to see the new pics click HERE

Tuesday 20th July 2004
My gig this Friday at The Mill has been cancelled due to licensing problems. Bugger. Luckily the Cottage of Content have booked me a week on Saturday 31st (see gig list for details). It has the reputation of a great rock pub so it should be a good night. A big "Thank You" to Mr. Adrian Marx for putting in a good word for me!
I'm looking forward to playing the Hop Pole this Saturday. I'll be doing a very loud "Guitar" orientated set for the good people of Bromsgrove. Bromsgrove also has the best Chinese Take Away of anywhere I know. Truly outstanding!
Some previously unseen Budgie photos have been discovered by my mate Axel Thomas. Check them out HERE and HERE. The first set are from Klub Stodola in Warsaw and the 2nd set are from 2003's Rock and Blues festival. If anyone else finds any cool (or otherwise) photos please e-mail me the URL and I'll post it on this newspage.

Thursday 1st July 2004
Just a quick note to say I've been booked to play at the Frying Pan in Darlaston THIS SATURDAY!! (3rd July). I'll see ya there!

Friday 11th June 2004
Not a lot to report at the moment hence the lack of News for the last few weeks. I've been paying regular visits to Cardiff where Budgie have been working on new material for our next album. Steve recently bought a double bass drum pedal and that will definitely get some abuse on some of the new stuff! There are distant rumblings about Budgie gigs in the Autumn but no firm dates as yet. I'll keep you posted.
It was my birthday a few weeks ago and I bought myself some new Marshall gear (yippeee!!). I'm now the proud owner of 2 DSL 100 heads and 2 4x12 cabs. (I'm also the proud owner of a couple of slipped discs). Thanks once again to Joel Richardson at Marshall HQ for sorting those out. (The amps not the discs!). Luckily I've been going to the gym up to 5 times a week since April so by the time I start gigging with the Marshalls I'll be able to carry a 4x12 in each hand. (Probably).

Thursday 6th May 2004
Poland was, once again, a great success. A big THANK YOU to everyone who made it - especially the TWO BLOKES (aka Chris & Tony). I wasn't sure if they'd be there but sure enough, right there at the front, as always. Superb! We got to visit Lublin and soak up the atmosphere at the President's pleasure. President Voivod invited us to attend an important gathering/party at the castle among university heads and clergy from all over Europe. It was a bizarre experience with everybody dressed up in their best suits and frocks and us lot in our jeans and T-shirts!. It was a "New Years Eve" kind of atmosphere with some of Polands finest bands playing in the square down below and people waving huge flags. History was made! Special thanks go to Walter of American Limo for driving us around and buying us all McDonalds! (Why can't we get Tiramisu milk shake over here?). Jareg for putting up with us and our strange ways! Thanks to the backline crew & Soundman Amplification. Thanks also to sound engineers Simon Dawson and Richard Munday for doing the business for us both out front and on stage. The Three Amigos (wha wha whowwww!!) - you know who you are!

I was back in the studio again with Al Atkins last week and we re-recorded "Cradle to the Grave" which was originally a bonus track on Al's "Heavy Thoughts" album. A new posh production and slightly up-tempo feel has worked really well and Al's touring guitarist Mike de Jager is editing his video of the session which will soon be available to watch.

Budgie Return to Poland!! (again!)
This is a bit short notice but we've been booked to headline a huge gig in Poland to commemorate their entry into the European Union on Saturday May 1st. This means my one-man-gig at the Horse & Jockey has now been postponed to Friday 4th June.
Talking of Poland, I've recently been listening to a CD by a Polish guitarist called Wojciech Hoffmann. This guy is a great composer as well as a superb guitarist and has one of the best guitar sounds I've ever heard. In fact I've spent the last couple of weeks re-vamping my own sound (which hasn't changed for 4 years!). My Budgie live sound is still the same (huge...massive..etc) but for my one-man-show and recording work you'll notice a big improvement. Thanks for the inspiration Wojciech and thanks to Andrej Kropiewnicki from Soundman Amplification for introducing me to his music.

Guitar Masterclass - a success!
A big thank you to the 80 or so people who - despite the weather, came to the Greendown Communtiy School yesterday! It was great fun and definately the biggest guitar lesson I've ever done! I hope you found my ramblings useful and inspiratonal. Thanks especially to Tony Frewin, Jerry Moss and Darren Hunt for organising the show and looking after me so well. I look forward to the next one.

RAF Cosford
I have to mention a gig I did last Thursday at RAF Cosford. The crowd there was one of the best I've ever encountered anywhere in the world and I'd like to thank my old mate Kev Place (yes the same guy who designed and maintained my original web site for 4 years) for organising the event. You guys are TOO LOUD!!!

Budgie in the USA!
Wow. That's all I can say. We had a superb time in the States. I'm so glad I got the chance to play in San Antonio after all the stories I'd heard about the place. We spent most of our time there, mainly so we could get used to the time difference. I've made a list of all the people I'd like to say a big "Hi y'all" to:- Bill Lee, Mehgan, Carlos, Greg, Carmen, Hannah, Larry McGuffin Jr.(superb guitar tech!) and everyone from Lone Star Attractions . Rick, Alex, Earl, Buddy, Kim & Jim from Moxy. Pete, Reb, Wayne, Chris & Michael from the Michael Schenker Group. Nigel the superb photographer, T-Bone, Craig and all at KZEP 104.5 - San Antonio's premiere Rock Radio station. Louis, Donna and Kerry from The Reservation The young dude from the Haagen Dazs store for the free rootbeer! (I was broke!). Mr Pringle, the taxi driver for the history lesson, Hermes music store and everyone who came to the "Meet and Greet" the day before our show including none other than former Budgie skinsman PETE BOOT!!!!

The gig at the Roxy theatre was also superb and I've tried to remember as many people as I can to thank for making the whole experience both pleasurable and memorable. Hi to John, and Chuck of Vyagra music, Kailea (business woman of the year 2025!), Jeff Chef, AJ Fritz (Fritz Rocks!), Bill the driver from Detroit, Keith Andreas, Jim the monitor engineer(!), everyone who came to the "Meet and Greet", United Airlines for temporarily losing all our guitars and the staff at Lehigh airport for getting them back to us! Steph Angie Kayleigh and Holly (the car crash girls!).

I'm really glad we finally made it to the Jaxx club after having cancelled twice! The crowd there were brilliant and it was great to have Raven opening for us - so strange hearing a Geordie accent so far from home! Special thanks must go to Will for picking us up from Allentown and chauffeur-ing us around Washington as well as cooking us some gorgeous steaks; along with Top Jim Curtin from Clear Channel. It was great to be able to see some of the most famous landmarks in the world. Thanks guys!

Tuesday 16th March 2004
Just in case you haven't looked recently, there are some new dates on the giglist for this month and April. Check them out HERE!

Tuesday 9th March 2004
Guitar Masterclass Date Change!!
As Budgie will be in the States for a bit longer than originally planned I thought it'd be wise to change the date of my guitar clinic to Sunday 4th April. This will give me more time to recover from jet lag and hopefully put on a better show. If anyone's got any questions or topics they'd like me to talk about feel free to e-mail me and if it can be done I'll address those during the show. Up-to-date info can be found HERE

Monday 8th March 2004
What a week! Last Monday's rehearsal was great - especially considering Budgie hadn't played together since our gig in Deal just before Christmas. The 2 shows we played in Poland were a really good experience for me. Both were sold out and it's the first time I've played in front of a crowd who were moshing, crowd surfing and literally packed in like sardines! I've certainly never been asked to sign so much stuff before and the fans were so polite yet so "up for it"! There were over 2000 people at each show. Special mention must go to Jareg who looked after us really well. Also to TSA who supported us on both shows (check out their web site HERE).

Video Download
You can now watch the video footage of my recent recording session with AL Atkins by clicking HERE, selecting "Video Gallery" and then click onto "Demon Deceiver". It's quite a large file so if you don't have broadband it might work best if you Right click it and Save Target onto your computer before you watch it. The file is in Real Player format and sadly some of it is badly out of sync but all the shots you see are from the takes which made the final cut. One thing which is not so clear is that I wrote the tune and produced the original demo which formed the guide track we played along to, but now you know!
Monday 1st March 2004
Just about ready to go and rehearse for the next 3 Budgie shows. We haven't played together since the last gig of the UK tour so it should be fun! I've been on holiday for the last week or so (San Francisco & Las Vegas - AWESOME!) so I apologise if anybody's tried to contact me. If I'd looked at my horoscope a couple of weeks ago it would have probably said "you will be travelling your arse off for the next few weeks". It would have been right! I'll be away in Poland for most of this week but I'll be able to catch up with any e-mails from Sunday onwards.

Recording Session
Yesterday I was in Mad Hat studios again with Al Atkins, this time recording one of my own compositions entitled "Demon Deceiver". When I first began working with Al back in January '03 he asked if I'd consider writing an instrumental that he could use on his next solo album. The tune is recognisibly "Simon Lees" with loads of widdly guitar work but there are some very dark sounding hooks and even a bit of classical fingerpicking (a first for me!). I'm really chuffed with the production courtesy of Mark Stuart and his excellent assistant Sheena. Al's off on tour in the USA next month and in my place will be the superb Mike de Jager from the Vaseline Rats. Mike brought his camcorder to the session yesterday and hopefully he'll be able to put some of the highlights on the web site. I'll keep ya posted.

Guitar Masterclass
I was recently invited to put on a guitar seminar/clinic (call it what you will!) in Swindon, Wiltshire on Sunday 28th March. Since then I've been frantically working on an update of my book (Signpost to the Fretboard) and trying to figure out what I'm gonna talk about. I've decided to split it between performing some of my tunes and explaining how I put them together. I'll also be talking about my approach to creating a great Rock Guitar sound using various F/X. There is a web page with details of the show and how to get there on: www.guitarclinic.co.uk
I mentioned that I've been busy updating my book "Signpost to the Fretboard". My plan is to make it available as a PDF file which can be purchased via my web site shop. This will involve me sending the file direct to the customer as an e-mail attatchment once the order has been recieved. Because the costs of materials have been all but eliminated, the price of the book will be much lower.

I'll be off to Texas with Budgie in March! We're at the Sunken Garden in San Antonio on the 20th which is where the "Life in San Antonio" album was recorded. I've never played in the States before so this will be a dream come true. If you keep up to date with my Gig List you'll notice that I did have gigs booked on the 19th and 20th. These gigs (Quarterhouse and Frying Pan) have been postponed until April.

Gigs Update.
More new gigs on't gig page! I had a call from Tony Pugh who used to run the Falcon.......(brief pause for nostalgia......). He's got me booked in at his new pub the Pyle Cock on Friday 30th. Now I've had a look at the room and it's extremely small but it should be atmospheric and probably quite loud so get there early if you want to grab a seat!
Thanks to everyone who turned up last weekend, Friday and Saturday were both great nights so expect to see me back in Great Barr and Blackheath soon.
Wednesday 14th January 2004
Gigs Update.
I've had a few gig bookings come in over the last few days so check my Giglist for details. This Friday I'll be back at The Joker in Hamstead Road, Great Barr. It's been nearly 4 years since I was there but it used to be a good night. I'm also back at the Mill this year starting on Friday 13th (ooh er..) of Feb.
Saturday 10th January 2004
MAJOR NEWS!!! Guitarist Magazine have featured one of my tracks on their cover CD!! The track is "2 B Frank" from my current album "Freethinka" which is available right HERE. This February '04 issue is packed with all manner of cool guitar reviews and features so BUY IT NOW!! A big THANK YOU goes to Simon Bradley for getting me included on the CD (again!!).
Wednesday 7th January 2004
Happy New Year everybody! Having just had my 2004 haircut I'm ready to get back to work.

If you were planning on coming to my show at the Noah's Ark this Friday - DON'T!! It's been re-scheduled for Sat. 31st Jan. The gig list is looking a bit quiet at the moment. I've got a lot of 'phone calls to make.

Budgie will be gigging in Poland in early March - see the gigs page for details. Back in the early '80s "I Turned To Stone" was a No. 1 hit for Budgie in that country so it'll be interesting to see if they still remember us over there.

I've given my LINKS page a bit of a tidy up. I've put the various sites into categories which should make it a bit easier to navigate.

Well, time to get back to work I guess!
Wednesday 24th December 2003

Hi folks! Only one day to go and then I can prove once again that I can out eat any mechanical waste disposal machine!
Well, the Budgie tour of 2003 has come to a close and I think I can speak for everyone when I say it was thoroughly enjoyable. Another new experience for me in a year jammed full of them! I'd like to say a big thank you to Joel Richardson and the guys at Marshall for the loan of Marshall gear for the tour. I used to have my own Marshall stack (100Watt JCM 800 Master Volume) but sold it when I began my solo career. The amps I got from Marshall were the original style Super Leads which I have to say sounded better than anything I've ever played through. (In conjunction with my Boss ME-10 of course!). Click HERE to go to the Marshall web site.
Another cool web site if you're a fan of classic rock bands is www.angelwitch.immortals.co.uk . Among other things there is another great review of Budgie's recent gig at The Limelight in Crewe.
Well, that's all I've got to say for now except have a fantastic Christmas and a fun 2004! Take care.

Friday 19th December 2003
This is embarrasing. I'm really sorry if anyone tuned in to Total Rock last night and waited patiently for the broadcast of Budgie's gig. I went to a lot of trouble to let people know about the event and in the end it was a complete waste of time. The gig went fine and was actually recorded and may be broadcast at a future date but I'm not gonna make any more promises. Once again I am truly sorry.
Tuesday 16th December 2003

Well, the Budgie Tour 2003 is coming to a close, I've played 21 gigs so far and the band is really cooking. This Thursday our show will be broadcast LIVE on www.totalrock.com . There is a support band so I guess we'll be on after 21.00GMT. On my links page there is a new link to a site called www.god-of-thunder.com . On this site you will see many excellent photos and reviews of many classic rock bands including a review of Budgie's performance at the Limelight in Crewe. There are many great photos from the gig too and it's well worth a look. A big thank you to all who've supported us at all the gigs, there hasn't been a bad one yet! Special mentions must go to the Two Blokes - 2003 was not their best performance apparently (Steve's still waiting for your sick notes boys!) but still great to see them at so many gigs; Terry and Carol from Rotherham; Geoff, the wheelchair guy from Swindon and Oxford; all our fine support bands including RAAR (thanks for the T-shirt guys!) Ravenscar (thanks for not knocking my fan too much - I shouldn't have put it there in the first place!); the ladies at Wortley tea room near Sheffield and loads who's names escape me - all good.
My one-man-show resumes in a couple of weeks so keep your eyes peeled on my gigs page for dates and venues.
Have a great Christmas everybody and if I don't see ya before, have a superb 2004 (yes I am a poet).

Tuesday 25th November 2003

It's been 2 weeks and 4 gigs since the last newsletter! Thanks to everyone who came to JB's and The Point - both were phenomenal nights and I think the rest of the UK tour is shaping up to be a real classic and one to remember. Last weekend Bugie played in Sweden; Rockland in Sala on Friday and Silja Festival "Rock at Sea" on Saturday (although it was actually 3.15am Sunday when we started to play - pure madness!). Special mentions go to Hans and Torsten the promoters, John the driver, Aron, Erland, Johann the ME-5 dude, Mike the unofficial photographer!! (loads of interesting photos which I am looking forward to seeing!). Many people came to both gigs and there were many who saw us at the Sweden Rock Festival in the summer. It was great to see familiar faces so far from home.
The band is playing extremely well at the moment - many people who have known the band for a long time have said we're playing better than ever - so if you can get to the shows you will not be disappointed - I guarantee it!

Tuesday 11th November 2003
For those of you who fancy coming to JB's this Firiday, Budgie will hit the stage at around 9.30pm. There will also be a support band for your enjoyment!
I'd like to thank everyone who made it to Kortrijk last Saturday (including the "Two Blokes") - it was AWESOME! We had an in-store signing session on Friday evening and as has happened before, I recognised many of the people who attended the session in the crowd. Special mention has to go to Frank the promoter and Pascal and Delphine who served some of the best food any of us have eaten for a very long time. If you visit the Kortrijk area I highly reccommend eating at Bistro-Prinsenhof, Lauwbergstraat 24, 8930 Lauwe. You won't be disappointed!
I came back from Belgium with a bit of a cold which hopefully will be gone by the weekend. At least I don't have to sing! See ya soon!
Thursday 23rd October 2003

The Duke of York at Trench, Telford has cancelled all entertainment pending further notice. I had gigs booked on the 1st and 30th of November so my only Telford show before Christmas will be at the Pear Tree Bridge Inn on Nov. 29th.

Something you guys could help me with. One or two people have commented that they can't find their way around my web site. Do you think it would be better to have the text on the homepage buttons permanently on display? At the moment the purpose of each button is revealed only when your mouse passes over it (which I think looks really cool). Does this make navigation more awkward?
Any feedback you could give would be great - you can e-mail me from the bottom of each page (if you can find it!)

Monday 13th October 2003

Budgie will hit the road in November for a series of shows - mainly in the UK. Check my gig list for details. This means if you want to catch my one-man-show before Christmas you've only got about 6 opportunities between now and the end of November (none in December)!

Since my last newsletter I've been on holiday to Cyprus for a necessary 2 week break. This year's been unbelievably busy! I now feel refreshed and ready for action (well, I will once I've had my breakfast!).

Last week I received an exciting package from Al Atkins. His new solo album "Heavy Thoughts" which features my guitar on two tracks "Cradle to the Grave" and "Sentenced". I recorded the songs with Al back in January and it's great to hear them on a proper album. You can find out all about Al and his Judas Priest past from my links page.

The rest of 2003 is gonna involve working on new tracks for my one-man-show - something that has been desperately needed for a long long time! And of course the Budgie tour which I'm looking forward to immensely. If you live in the West Midlands area I strongly reccommend you come to the JB's show on November 14th - it's gonna ROCK!

Take care and I'll see ya soon!

New Pics!
On the Miscellaneous Gallery you can now see pics taken at my album launch. These are some of the faces you may see at many of my gigs and a scary sight it is too.

Sunday 24th August 2003
Just a quick note to say a big thank you to everyone who turned up to the Crown Club last night for the launch of FREETHINKA. It was a great night and there will be some photos on the gallery page in the next couple of weeks. Cheers!
Friday 22nd August 2003

Hi Folks!

New Album - On the Streets!!
FREETHINKA will be launched tomorrow (Sat 23rd) at the Crown Club, King Edward Street, Darlaston.
The show will kick off at around 8.30pm and I'll be playing a few of the tunes from the album as well as my regular stuff. I haven't been able to create backing tracks for all of the songs as my hard drive blew up before I had the chance. This has now been sorted and over the next few months I'll create the main ones from scratch.
Listen out for Out on the Air; Freethinka; Angry Dolphins; Your World (New version); Ring Leader, Burning Sky; Company; Open Your Eyes; U Don't Know Me; All My Dreams Are Coming Blue; 2 B Frank; Eastern Wind.
BUDGIE are planning a UK tour towards the end of the year and when I've got the details I'll be posting them on my gigs page so look out for that.

Al Atkins has recorded an old Judas Priest classic with myself on guitar. Al actually owns the rights to "Dreamer Deceiver" and plans to put it on one of his next albums as a bonus track. The track was recorded at Mad Hat Studios and produced by Mark Stuart. I'm really pleased with myself on this one - the solos sound great!

New Look Web Site!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
After nearly 4 years of sterling work, Kev Place has handed over the web site baton to The Bacon Sandwich Workshop. This Anglo - Australian company has a proven track record spanning many meals and cups of tea, not to mention the odd baarrbie. Unique, exclusive and elusive, their web sites, like them, are simple ... but effective. If you flick around the site you will notice a few new galleries and items of interest. I've re-written many of the equipment tutorials to bring them bang up-to-date with my current thinking.

Archive news items will no longer be kept on the new look site so I recommend copying and pasting any info that interests you. This also means that you'll need to visit frequently to keep track of weekly developments.

PS. Bla bla bla bla bla blablablablablablablablablablablablblblablaaaaaaa
